whats your definition of progressive overload? (srs)

i see newbies at the gym always try and curl the 35s as if they could honestly do anymore than 2 or 3 reps...

i adopted my own take on this video:

i started off with 5 or 10lb dumbbells and dont go up in weight until i can do 4 sets of 10 per exercise...took me 2 years to go from 10lb side laterals to 25lb side laterals...and reverse grip ez curl bar from 20lbs to 60lbs also took over 2 years.

I used to follow the exact same format.

I would not progress to a higher dumbbell, move the peg on a machine or add plates to a bar unless I hit 2 sets B2B for 12 reps.

If I could do 2 sets with the same weight at 12 reps each, I moved the weight up by about 5-10lbs.

Increased workload without significant alterations in form (breakdown)

Increased weight, reps, or sets. I don’t count rest times or “density” training as progressive overload

true. i rest as much as i need to. sometimes 3-5 minutes between sets when my sets are 8-10 reps.. usually just 90 seconds when i only do 4-8 reps per set.

i'm thinking as a natty its gonna take me another 2 years to go from 30 to 35 for side lateralsany tips on this?

I only ever rested a minute between sets and two minutes between difference exercises.

Idk, I didn't do anything special other then hit my calories for the day and I progressed pretty quickly w/o anything special.

Anything that makes your previous workload harder

More weight, tempo changes (slower up, down, contraction, stretch), better form or mmc, achieving same set later in workout, shorter rest, etc

Today I did side laterals with 38lbs (Aussie kg to lbs) for 3 sets of 7.

IMO the biggest mistake people make with these smaller movements is not attacking progressive overload hard enough. Alot of people think about progressively overloading the compounds but when it comes to isolations they half-ass it and just try to go for a pump and do a bunch of random reps.

You need to attack progressive overload on every exercise you do, otherwise it’s a waste of time
