her mother is chinese. i think she had to renounce her u.s. citzenship. cant have dual repping china. she has to hold a chinese passport. she has a boatload of sponsorship deals that the usa could not compare.

she may be already set for life after that gold. she will be bigger repping china than the usa.

she'd just be forgotten olympian in the u.s.

smart business move for her.

americans are hating and calling her a traitor. they aren't paying her bills though,

she's just a kid. from what i gather she was already thinking of repping china since 15 years old. she is 18 now. i read into her earlier to see what the hate was about.

apparently born and raised in sf. trained in tahoe. raised by mother and grandmother. dad is not there. spends summers in china. fluent mandarin. mom is highly educated and very successful.

said she wants to inspire all the chinese youths since freestyle skiing isnt a thing there. pretty just accomplished that goal.

if it was just for monetary reasons and not the "inspiration for chinese females" that shoudnt be a problem at all.

guess you’re right

“Though she switched to compete for China, it's unclear whether she renounced her American citizenship -- usually a requirement for Chinese naturalization, since the country does not allow dual citizenship. Gu has never publicly commented on the status of her American citizenship, though an article on the official Olympic site referred to her "dual nationality" in January.”

There was an American who defected. 19 year old figure skater. she even had to change her name from a western name to a traditional chinese one.

she fell, twice.

Sloot could barely speak Mandarin which pissed off the Chinese obviously.

apparently you cannot find her online in China anymore. she was supposed to be the fuk u, middle finger to the US. shes prob ded.

LOL looks like being raised in the US doesnt work for chinese values.
"While her teammates on the sidelines welcomed her back warmly, online the reception was largely negative.

"She has no strength and it seems like she has no passion and enthusiasm on the stage," one social media user wrote.

Others ridiculed her distress. "I hate that she's crying. Can crying solve anything?" one wrote."

Gu has racked up sponsors in the US and China alike, per a recent report from the New York Post. Red Bull and Beats by Dre number among her American sponsors, and among her Chinese sponsors are the Bank of China, China Mobile, and Mengniu, a dairy company.

In addition to these endorsements, she's also the spokesperson for Luckin' Coffee, a coffee chain considered the Starbucks of China, per the Post.

These endorsement deals are said to be worth around $2.5 million, according to Shanghai-based media outlet Yicai Global.

Some experts estimated her earnings from brand sponsorships in 2021 alone to be worth more than 100 million Chinese yuan, or about $15.8 million, per the report.

Gu is also a model who has worked with numerous fashion houses.

Gu is the "hottest name in luxury," as Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post put it.

The teen has starred in campaigns for luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, and Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen, per SCMP.

Gu has also made appearances on the covers of magazines like L'Officiel, Vogue, and Elle, her Instagram shows.

apprently scored 1580 on SAT's ( i thought they don't do that anymore)
She was the first student to graduate a year ahead at the San Francisco University High School, a private school that charges $54,130 annually, per The New York Times.

She later received an offer from Stanford University, and is slated to graduate with the class of 2026.

Gu is bilingual — aside from English, she is also fluent in Mandarin, which she learned from spending her summers in Beijing. Some of her hobbies growing up included horseback riding, rock climbing, and cross-country running, according to the official Olympics website.
