Is it a bad idea to try to contact aliens?

There must be some other forms of life somewhere.

I’d it a bad idea to make contact? I think so.

Our history had shown that the stronger species take over (hello USA, Australia etc)

Yes.

Any Aliens that could receive our message and travel to us would be so far advanced that they would wipe us out with no effort.

Best case they come here in peace and bring some alien disease and accidentally kill us off like the early European explorers did to the natives in the America's.

No but I feel it is a waste of time and resources. It's like being an ant trying to contact something a mile away.

I mean from my perspective I would say no because if they are indeed capable of intergalactic travel they must have evolved beyond HTC culture and thus they probably have invented some form of technology to unclog a toilet after a woman goes too far at chipotle during lunch and returns home to fart out a prodigiously repulsive olfactory nerve melting chocolate sewer serpent the effects of which cannot be reversed by several hours of aggressive plungering with an X-FILES-A-PHILE tshirt pulled up over the nose so again my vote is a firm no

It would happen the other way around though.

The aliens have the technology for intergalactic travel but don't have filters or ways to close of the climate in their ships? Not likely.

I think that one of the best arguments for life on other planets is that they haven't contacted us yet. I mean, would you?

Yes. There's pretty strong evidence that we are either alone in the universe or that every other civilization that has grown to the point where it could travel and colonize other solar systems in our galaxy, is deliberately hiding from us (and every other extraterrestrial species).

I think it's the former, but the latter could be true if life truly does exist elsewhere (BTW, there is NO evidence that it does and just assuming the universe is so big that it must is a logical fallacy).

Yes, what does that have to do with anything.

The Native Americans were isolated from Europe/Africa/Asia. They had no immunity to diseases that were in Europe/Africa/Asia. Even today there are isolated tribes that have no or almost no contact with the rest of the world and besides them probably killing you, we aren't allowed to visit them because just meeting them would probably wipe them out due to diseases we carry but have immunity to.

Are you aware that the vast majority of Native Americans died from disease well before any capable force came over from Europe?

Irrelevant. If they have the ability to see us and come here, we are inferior to them on a level where our survival is based solely on how they view lower lifeforms.

Yeah I thought that was obvious, humans don't have immunity to squirrel diseases either but we don't all die any time we go outside.

We've been transmitting radio signals towards space for a while now. If aliens did receive it, they are probably listening to Elvis Presley's "JailHouse rock" and listening to broadcasts of the Korean war. Maybe they are not impressed.

Radio/TV transmissions have hardly had time to go anywhere in just 100+ years.

The distances in space are vast.

There are only 76 stars within 100 light years of Earth.

There are 100,000,000,000 stars in our galaxy alone (Milky Way).

Ah I see what he means now. That part did go over my head.

I agree but there are also diseases that are shared between species. Ex black plague was given to us by rats, the flu is from birds etc.

Obviously we'd have no idea what would happen but it's possible that they'd have some disease that could effect us. And my point about the Europeans is they didn't commit biological warfare, a lot of the Natives died because they simply met and shook hands and traded with the Europeans. At least this happened at the beginning.

So it's possible the aliens come and purposely give us diseases that would kill us and it's possible they show up and are peaceful and accidentally kill us with some sort of disease and it's possible their diseases don't effect us at all.

So there are differing schools of thought on this one, but yeah there's a non-zero chance that shouting "hello! hello??!!!" into the void might be a bad idea. A hostile intelligent technologically advanced alien race resident within our galaxy will inevitably discover us at some point, but it might be better to delay that meeting until we've had another few 100 or K's of years to develop our own technology.

One counterargument that does make sense is any race that can turn up on our doorstep could definitely wipe us out but we won't have any resources that they need to take: they have better tech and get get their own water, gases and metals from asteroid belts and comets. However that doesn't mean that they can't have hostile intentions. Maybe we don't know of any other alien races because one of them is busily wiping out all intelligent life as soon as it arises.

If you look at both sides of the spectrum in terms of pros and cons, they’re really all pros.

If they interact and advance our civilization, great. If they decide to wipe us all out, great….no more globohomo agenda and life can try again.

I don’t think it’ll happen but I do think the global powers that be will stage an encounter and eventually an invasion of alien life someday. Before it ever happens for real as in real aliens who’ve traveled to us from other solar systems/planets.
