Belgium first country ever to adopt a 4 day work week

Belgium is pushing ahead with plans to adopt a four-day work week, potentially making it the first EU member state to do so.

According to Bloomberg, Belgian workers have "won the right to perform a full work week in four days instead of the usual five...without loss of salary."

Fortunately for employers who can't afford such a transition, they will have the right to turn down workers' request for a 4-day week...provided they can produce a strong argument for doing so.

Employers will still have the right to turn down employees’ requests for a condensed work week, on condition they explain their refusal in writing, Deputy Prime Minister and Labor Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne said Tuesday in Brussels. For companies, it will become easier to introduce evening and night work without prior agreement from all labor unions.

"The goal is to give people and companies more freedom to arrange their work time," Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Tuesday in Brussels. “If you compare our country with others, you’ll often see we’re far less dynamic.”

It looks like the new policy is intended to improve employment in the Belgian economy, as only 71 out of 100 Belgians in the prime working age group of 20 to 64 have a job, which is below the average for the euro zone. It's a full 10 percentage points less than in neighboring countries like the Netherlands and Germany, according to data from Eurostat.

Belgium's seven-party coalition government has set a goal to boost employment to 80% by 2030, something it says it needs to keep its pensions fully funded and to finance future tax cuts.

Wouldn't work in the US. Companies here want to squeeze the life out of you for max profit.

If corporations really wanted to squeeze max profit, they’d identify and scale back all the roles where people are getting paid 8hrs a day for 1hr of actual work and 7hrs of miscing

Yea I’d rather work 7 days a week and have the opportunities to succeed than work 4 days a week in the EU and be guaranteed to remain a peasant.

You guys don’t live in the EU. The entire system is set up in a way that’s a modern version of medieval Europe… the rich stay rich, the working class lives paycheck to paycheck for life.

You know those stories of Americans that are poor but worked hard and started a business to become wealthy? Ya that’s 1 in a billion in Europe.

True, more economic opportunity in the US... BUT, 90%+ of the population will never be a successful business owner.

The system in the EU is better for the average man.

I manage a fairly large global organization. I was approved to take 100% of my team to a 4 day work week. We are already virtual. The reason I ultimately couldnt end up implementing it is due to European law.

4 day work week but with the same working hours. So on 4 days you’d have to work 10 hours.

it isnt just business ownership though. im not sure where in the EU you live, but I have quite a bit of family (big fam) all over.

it seems to be that the idea of ambition is in someway frowned upon in europe, whereas here in canada and to a larger extent in america, it seems to be the opposite. there are countless stories to the point that its comical of first gen immigrants here whos kids go on to be successful doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.

those stories are few and far between in europe. i cant exactly pin point why that is, but again it seems to be that the entire system is set up to keep the status quo... if youre wealthy, your kids will be wealthy; if youre middle class, your kids will be middle class.

Lol, that's not true, there is still opportunity in (western) europe though.

Here's a redpill, western euro are MUCH richer than mericans:

But that's the point brah, most people are average. Most people are a regular Joe hence the EU setting up a system catering to them instead of the 1% like in America.

Funny part is western euros are richer in the end even if people have more economic opportunity in the US. (which is also debatable)

Not a commie though but some americans really believe capitalims is god's greatest gift

most of those small european countries you cannot buy even 10 acres of land unless you are a billionare. hell there aren't even 10 acre plots available in most of em.

in the US you can still get 40-100 acres of good land for the cost of an avg home in the suburbs. fkin landowner class mogging eurocucks hard AF. DGAF about silly charts

the average peasant in europe makes more than the average peasant in north america. yes.

one of the differnces is though, the average peasant here has a good chance of moving up the socioeconomic ranks whereas in europe that is statistically unlikely.

you ever wonder why it is that most innovations seem to come from the US and not from europe? europeans arent dumber than americans. why?

Lol what? Europe is extremely innovative and at the fore front of cutting edge tech. Or wait you think twitter and ******** are cutting edge innovative tech? Lol

Btw ever heard of JET, CERN, ITER or ASML?

Anyway, the average person has a better life in (western) europe than the US and is richer, that's a fact so don't know why you're coping so hard.

And ya social media is (or was) definitely innovative. Look how many people use social media across the world for all sorts of purposes. I wouldn’t call research papers innovative though.

But I’m talking tech/pharma innovations, the US dominates in that regard. Why do you think that is?

And I don’t need to cope brah, I have an EU citizenship lol. I can move there anytime I want.
