Why do people say you will be bored in retirement? I’m busier than ever :(

On leave until September and chit is more hectic than ever

Basically have to schedule appointments to get things done during business hours

Between all the general things of minor repairs and maintenance on the house, walking and feeding the dog, working on cars, etc, might get in a 9pm gym session then watch 1 episode of something on Netflix and then get to bed around midnight

I thought it was going to be way more laid back

Haven’t even been socialising much

TLDR: somehow I’m more busy while not going to work wth

Nope I’m literally on paid leave

I have a property development business but haven’t been doing any actual work in connection with that, it’s been out with engineers for months

I thought I’d be sleeping in and day drinking but not a chance

So imagine if you have 2 decades of retirement, after you get through the backlog of repairs / maintenance on the house, fix up your project cars and don't have a backlog of appointments. Your day is now wake up, eat breakfast, walk the dog, then open for the rest of the day except a gym session and maybe a walk for cardio.

It requires effort to fill that time and lots of people don't like effort. What you're describing is a long vacation.

of course not. last time I took an extended time off I did a ton of yardwork, some maintenance I had put off, etc... but I remember I had a couple months off when I lived in an apartment once (took time off between jobs and had a big leave payout) and had so much free time it was daunting. I did fill most of it with hobbies like fishing and hiking though.

My wife’s on paid leave until March 2023

Hopefully the travel restrictions are lifted and I can get my mum to arrive before wife returns to work

That's really not retirement to a lot of people. That's saying I don't need a job, I'm good on money, but i'm still doing things i like.

Retirement to a lot of people is they wake up, THE ENTIRE day is theirs to not do anything work related, aka drink, play video games, watch TV, etc but day after day, week after week
Only thing is, their friends are in the race still, so it's really lackluster

The only reason anyone is bored in retirement (other than health issues), is due to forgetting how to have hobbies.

Over time, people come to rely on school and then work as what fills up their time, instead of finding and then engaging in things they like to do.
