Saving this for my most epic car porn post of all time...

Hey all. Still having lots of car fun. Tomorrow evening have a great event planned. Hagerty is putting on a private event for us (about 30 people in our group) to tour, dinner and drinks at one of the nicest car collections (private) in the country. Just absolutely unbelievable stuff. I think the total value is north of 200mil. All kinds of cars from model T to McLaren P1. Many historic cars and pedigree race driven stuff also.

SUPER excited for this and it was great to be involved in setting it up.

Will come back and post some cool pics!

[EDIT] Preview of the quality to come!

Meh....doesnt do it for me. 4 of my friends got Plaids. It is neat, but kind of a one trick pony. My one car is not much slower than a plaid, and 100x the fun.
My other car is WAY slower than a plaid, but 1,000,000 times the fun.

Currently my focus of obsession. Over Christmas, my son and I added a supercharger and a bunch of other mods to our track car.  About same P/W as a huracan now. Almost no electronics. As analog as a car can get. No driver aids, no power steering and MILES more fun to drive than a Tesla.
If schedule permits, we will be running VIR again in a month.  Will be the 2nd time my son drove VIR at 14.

-what’s the kerb weight (approx)
-did you actually remove power steering, traction control and ABS or did it not come with them originally
-is this purely a track car or is it street-registered

-how the hell are you driving the ECU if there’s no electronics? Don’t tell me you’re running carbs and a rotary ignition?

Weight is 1900lbs. Still street legal but modified for track fun.
The elise/exige did not come with power steering from the factory. Car was built on an full alum monocoque chassis tub w/ roll bar above head. Basically built like a street legal car that you can take right to track.

Car has no 'nannies' or driver aids. You legally could not build a car like this anymore as things like stability and traction control are mandated. The car does have ABS, but it is disabled on my car. Once you start getting a lot more tire than stock under the car, the ABS gets confused. If you run slicks you can get in a lot of trouble as the ABS will 'ice' you out.

When I was saying 'no electronics', I was referring to the countless layers of driver aids in modern cars. Of course it has an ecu.

The car even has 'power windows', but that is because lotus figured out it could save 1.5lbs with an electric version vs manual crank. Everything on the car is weight sensitive from the factory and my car is modded from there.

Mods for performance and safety. This might be the favorite car I have ever owned, and my 'super car' sits in the garage as I mostly choose this to drive lately.

Yes it does have factory air conditioning. Living in the south I'm keeping it but you can drop about 30 lb by removing it. My intercooler right now is in the rear and if I end up building something for crazy horsepower I may have to lose the AC in order to mount the intercooler in the front. But for right now I'm keeping it.

Thanks man this really is a lot of fun and getting to share with my son is the best thing. He's just bummed because he hasn't been able to drive the car since we put the supercharger but I'm thinking about trying to get out to a place where I can let him drive it a little. If I drive over the line to South Carolina probably a lot less repercussions if we get pulled over there. Plus there's quite a few nice back roads.

Anyway I'm very excited for tonight and should have some really cool and very historical car stuff to post. Feels super lucky to get the opportunity to go visit the collection we're going to.

Paying up on promise....... Gonna break up in separate posts because just too much for one. But for the first one, it deserves a post all to itself!

Well you might say a McLaren F1 is a rare car. Fetching 25-30 mil for one, you dont see them often. But what is even more rare? How about the #4 out of 5 orignal prototype car?!

Check out the full titanium exhaust AND headers.

Yes...the keys are in it too!

Just wow man. I'd love to see an F1 in person. I don't think I've ever seen one that color and I think it's my new favorite. If that thing was sold today, it would look absolutely stunning and not even dated. Looks a hell of a lot better than the new cars from Gordon Murray imo.

Finally! I had about lost hope for this place. Yea, I am still in awe of getting to see this. Some cool history. 5 porotypes made. XP1 was destroyed. XP2 was used in crash testing and destroyed. The factory still has XP5 which was used to set production car speed record in 1998. XP3 and XP4, are the only two in private hands in the world. Gordon Murray sold the XP3 (he is the designer of the F1 and part of his contract he got to keep a prototype). So this XP4 is the second oldest surviving F1 in existence.

The value of this is beyond money, but quantifying it a sale guess would be north of 30 mil and possibly towards 40.

I have ANOTHER EQUALLY amazing car and maybe more rare next! Yes....no joke!

Bad quality(might get better with time though)
Bad marketing(bad distribution channels(no traditional dealership), promoted solely through word of mouth(which gets annoying as you turn people into NPCs that must defend their purchase so as not to lose face)
Interior is horrid.

Some white walls in the back, but go back further and Bugatti knew how to keep it 'clean' looking even back then.

Who said Porsche started the Miami Blue thing?.... This pre-dates that by quite a bit

can you explain what exactly this is? are you in a private museum as it looks to be? are there drinks & food? are you there all day or something?

whats the point? Is it a sales pitch for buying cars or something else?

whats the point? Is it a sales pitch for buying cars or something else?

regardless cool stuff. Kinda looks like jay lenos garage with all the variety.
Nope. Private collection. No sales pitch. I just like cars. I was lucky enough to be invited for a private viewing.

OK, I cant help myself.

Everyone knows what a GT40 is. This is not a kit car. Just calling it a GT40 does not do it justice. This is THE GT40! Or one of 3.

This is the 1966 GT40 MKII-A piloted by Bruce McLaren, and Chris Amon that won the 1966 24 hours of LeMans where Ford swept Ferarri in a 1-2-3 finish. Yep. The actual car!

It is insured for 35mil.

The owner (and insurance company) has actually let his mechanic take it out on our local highway. When asked if he was worried about rock chips, ....the owner said "Its a race car! It is supposed to have chips!"

Still more car porn to come!

Awesome.

One more question, with the mid-engine setup - do you find that it handles significantly differently than a comparable front engine/rear drive car?

Thinking of buying myself a car more suited to my lifestyle next year when the market is less insane and wondering if mid mount is as good as claimed
