All I'll say is, consider tweaking the plan to allow for remote work. You can pull resources from larger society to supplement and improve your micro society without submitting to it or totally relying on it.

That is very true, every resource possible should be used. Something like you describe could work well into bringing "foreing currency" into the paralel society

It's not just that, say you club together and get 250 acres or something... You'll be lacking pretty much all natural resources and the things you can produce will be limited (good luck growing coffee in Canada etc). If a few members are working, and their salaries are being paid into a non-profit that exists to benefit the community, you have a few hundred thousand dollars a year coming in, tax free. There's your money for fuel, tools, equipment, etc. You can of course produce things and trade them for other things but it is unlikely to be as easy or effective as "remote work."

You should be as self-sufficient as possible while using what you can to maximise living standards.

Some people actually believe in getting involved, somehow, and building something, even if it seems pointless.
For example the political party I belong to regularly holds 1/3 of the French vote. That's a very large and potentially winning party.
All of this could not be done without every little person inside the party, which does voluntary work for it.
This is what democracy is about.

1/3 of the vote won't cut it though, right wing parties always get killed in the later rounds looking at French elections. I have no faith in the wider public, hence me wanting out.

I'm with OP on growing your own food and building your own house. I'm still trying to find a happy medium to do just that in my area. However I don't want to unplug from society, I actually like the part of the country I'm in now. Honestly even if I wanted to, I just don't have enough money to do so.

That's the whole issue, you're still at the mercy of big intrusive abusive government.
You have options. If your community is registered as a non-profit organization then it is exempt from property tax. If you're large enough and live in a sparsely populated county you make up a large chunk of the vote and local politicians will probably lick your balls. You can also incorporate and govern yourselves if you're large enough.

There are autonomous indigenous villages with their own government and society, off grid hippie eco societies, Mennonite farming communities, etc.
