Osaka has been the poster child of the media taking note of mental health issues with athletes. She has pulled out of tournaments because she felt that she needed to take care of her mental health. She blamed outside pressure. Many (really who is to say how many) people are like see ... this is why we need to treat each other better because athletes have feelings and so we shouldn't be critical of them. This sentiment is in stark contrast to the atmosphere I grew up in, the 90s. Then you had mental toughness being touted. Athletes were lauded for persevering through adversity instead of lamenting the fact that they had to face adversity at all. Michael Jordan's stone cold win at all cost mentality.

But now the focus is shifting to off the court/field issues. To me that's where things fall apart. The competition should be the escape. That should be where you get your mind right. So last night Osaka starts to cry during her match because some clown yells out 'you suck.' That was enough to bring Osaka to tears and in turn lose her match. Osaka tries to take the mic DURING the damn match only to be refused. And then addresses the crowd after LOSING.

That's soft. It's mentally weak. Whoever brought her up did her a disservice by allowing such weak behavior. Parents/caretakers should instill in their children that life is going to throw up a bunch of roadblocks to your goals. It's on you to stay focused.

I'd agree it weren't the fact that she's losing as a result. I realize that she's making bank with the marketing contracts but at some point she has to maintain her status as elite level athlete or those will dry up.

I mean anxiety and depression exist for some but there are a lot of people who take it to mean stress in general, which affects everyone.

Social media is a recent development and players previously didn't get thousands and thousands of people calling them chit etc in their Instagram comments and dms. They do see that kind of stuff, don't think that it's possible to just ignore it.
Secondly tennis crowds are definitely more badly behaved and more scummy now that they were. Jeering, booing, sarcastic clapping etc etc. Some players can ignore it like Djokovic, some react angrily like Medvedev and some others end up breaking down.

I don't doubt that a never ending barrage of abuse can bring a lot of people down, no matter what generation you belong to. It's just that previously not every idiot could express their opinions before and be heard. Now they can

As for the crowds being worse now, I agree. But like someone else pointed out earlier ITT, by wearing her emotions on her sleeve, Osaka is only encouraging the ****ty behavior.
