It’s more than Biden. It started with Trump and printing up trillions for lazy ass people to stay home and then the handouts continued under Biden. Inflation was bound to come on like a freight train.

We should have never shut down the economy.

Don’t print out trillions and helicopter it out
Don’t pause student loan payments

The best way to solve it would have been to let '09 finish crashing all the way, rather than starting up this QE bullchit.

The second best way would have to been raising interest rates in '13, after the economy was strong enough to stand on its own.

The third best way would have been to raise interest rates in '18, like JPow was going to do before Trump pressured him out of it.

The fourth best way would have been to limit printing in '20 and not spent $3T literally just goosing the stock market.

We're out of good options now. It's taken a decade to create this mess, we're not going to get out of it overnight.

Avoiding corporate welfare in 2007/08 would have been a big part of it

Would have sent an important message to everyone

In summary: adopt actual capitalism where the market allocates both risk and returns

This. This made no damn sense. In a time where workers were needed more than ever we paid people to stay home.

Pretty much any of that would have helped.

So much this. Either it was corruption, a lack of fortitude, or the situation is/was truly FUBAR to the point where there was nothing to be done to salvage the system.

But even if it is/was FUBAR they still should have ripped those massive financial institutions into smaller pieces. How is it okay for 2 investment firms that sort of own each other to have majority ownership of so much?

I can't believe that we wouldn't be in a somewhat better place if they had made the "too big to fail" into 4 or 5 companies each that could darn well fail without taking down the entire financial system.

People seem to think the financial system=the economy

A firm’s productive capacity and in particular its ability to employ labour is not, in the short run, a function of its market capitalisation

Too big to fail is a fiction invented to give cover to corporate bailouts

Well at least in regards to the large banks and securities firms I'm not sure that is the whole story. I'm don't know if I'm up to stating it all explicitly and accurately, but the rough picture is a failure cascade...one default causing another default causing another default.

That was supposedly why the LIBOR was so nuts- the banks were aware that they were holding a certain amount of trash and couldn't be sure if the other parties/banks were sound or were holding as much or more trash themselves.

Yup that’s counterparty risk which caused the interbank lending rate to spike which in turn raised retail lending rates.

Good.

1 person defaulting on their loan is the borrower’s problem.

1 million people defaulting on their loan is the bank’s problem.

They literally have a license to print money, except they don’t need to go to the expense of printing it. They just lend it out of thin air.

They’re so against government intervention until their own greed bites them in the ass.

Yes rustled.

You can't avoid inflation, you can only control and limit it.

But keeping energy independence and cheap energy around would have gone a long way to help

-don't fund the creation of biological weapons in china
-don't intentionally release a bioweapon on the world
-don't lock down everything and prevent people from working
-don't pay people to sit at home and do nothing
-don't print a chit ton of money to give to people sitting at home doing nothing

You wouldn't even have to do anything to do a better job than the government. Just don't actively try to destroy our economy like they are doing

Dissolve the federal reserve and Prosecute politicians for attempting to control the free market, create social policies, and play identity politics. This includes “stimulus” money, which is absolutely unconstitutional. Causing inflation is taxation without representation and stimulus is tyranny.

Any 16 year old who didn’t fail Economics could come up with a solution. The problem is that people don’t want it. The average voter is a dirty centrist coward who would sacrifice everything for their own security and comfort. An economic depression in the middle of a “deadly pandemic” is horrible for re-election, especially when you piss off the wrong people who can influence the “fair” voting system with propaganda and money.

That is precisely the problem democracy is meant to solve.

Unfortunately a 2 party system is so far removed from democracy you will never see that outcome

Also if you put a lot of these corporate bailouts to a popular vote I actually think the vast majority would vote against them

Not locked down for COVID, not given out any free money, not decimated domestic oil production. Those 3 things would have prevented basically all inflation. 80% of all money in circulation today was printed off in the last 2 years. That's absurd and makes me think the inflation is intentional. Economy is a man made construct and humans understand things that are man made. Anybody who understands basic economics knew it was going to happen as soon as they started doing it. It's only starting, unless we open up all drilling, and even if we did today, we wouldn't see a major increase in drilling for at least a year and a half. That's how long it takes from prospecting land to pumping oil. Once gas hits 200-300 dollars a barrel, that's 6-9+ dollars a gallon. And that's how much more it's gonna cost to stock stores with supplies.

Not stop the entirely of what causes life to exist to protect against a potential virus.

On top of that, many epidemiologists were pleading against lockdowns, that it would ruin many more lives than staying open. John Hopkins released a study a month or 2 ago after the fact saying the lock downs had 0 impact on COVID mortality. Makes me think that the whole thing was intentional and based on economics rather than science. Economics in the fact that it was the biggest transfer of wealth in human history. Gut the middle class and give to the elite.
