its the tension between the anchor and where the chain is attached, just like how muscles in our body become tense to lift weight and how harder materials can bear more weight.

Lads, I've sat through a few nautical classes and have a PhD in Ocean Sciences - I can tell you that each and every one of you is wrong!

There is a species of Crab, called the Anchor Crab, that run up to an anchor whenever they see one dangling in the water, and clamp it tight with their claws of might.

This stops the vessel from moving/drifting away.
