I wonder how renters will feel when they are old and retired.

It's unfortunate how the housing market is going right now, but it's best to build some equity and work with that.

I think most of the rent vs own stuff stems from the desire to distinguish oneself. Owning property is definitely status related, which is why it comes up so often.

Renting long term isn't a good idea, but for anyone just getting out on their own the first time it's very convenient while building your income. What a lot of miscers fail to understand is that staying home with parents while saving for a house isn't an ideal situation for everyone.

Owing a home a is a huge responsibility that a lot of people refuse to take on.

Renting gives you more flexiblity to enjoy life.

Because they can't be approved for a mortgage to buy a house. If you have too much debt, your credit is ass, you don't make enough, etc. Anyone claiming renting is beneficial is just coping extra hard because inside they're really seething and immensely jealous of their friends that have been able to be financially responsible enough to buy a piece of property and sit outside on their porch looking out at their trees and dog playing in the yard while a rentcel has to keep it down because neighbours on all 4 sides of them might call the landlord for a noise complaint in the rat-infested sardine box they live in.

Source: used to rent in a major city. Absolute dogschit.

This as well. Owning a house comes with a lot of added stress and responsibility. In my experience, the positives have far outweighed the negatives.

Unironically this, and it'll get worse now with rising home prices that require much larger down payments, and coupled with rising rates, much higher monthly payments. I think most people would prefer to own if they could afford to.

Can confirm house prices are pure insanity in these parts. A buddy of mine got an old bungalow for half a million recently. Strong evaluation to paid price correlation of peace and prosperity. I must have made a half million myself in the past few yearseasilyout of the properties I own.

Thats why i bought a condo; instead of home.

It gives me the home ownership i want; without having to deal with stuff mowing the lawn, shoveling show, etc.

However, everything indoors is my responsilbility. Plumbing problems? Electrical issues? Deal with if yourself. You kinda miss those days when a call to builiding management could solves all your problems.

Also many people just pay out the loan

Historically itโ€™s around 1/3 renting from a landlord, 1/3 renting from a bank, 1/3 owning

Point is not everyone has a loan on their property
Everyone who is trying to accumulate wealth should take out the largest mortgage possible for each property. Paying cash is a far less attractive investment than buying with leverage.

I donโ€™t know why people still somehow have a hard time understanding the benefits of fixed low interest mortgages.

Yeah, that was a big learning curve for me especially considering that the millennial generation I'm part of are not particularly handy. I swear my dad just had this innate knowledge of how to fix stuff in the house when I was a kid. Although, the original owner of my current house was obviously a boomer handyman who did it all himself because some jobs here are pure dogschit, like awful plumbing renovations and bad electrical wiring. Luckily, I hire competent professionals to help me with these things.

I can see the benefit of being in a condo. I personally wouldn't want to be in one myself, but I can see it. Condo fees reasonable? I know someone who told me their condo association or whatever it is hiked up the fees tremendously. Is that variable?

Right now, I pay 383...which is not bad; considering they take care of the area pretty well.

Condo fees usually go up every year; usually based on inflation and how much money management has forecasted for any upcoming maintenance/repairs, etc.

But i have heard places with crazy condo fees....500 lol...and its not even downtown...

I'd be fukking pissed if I was forced to pay some illegal immigrants $383 a month to cut my grass.

I can get a maid, meal prep, lawn care, and a rub and tug for less than that.

I pay $300 per month for a room and invest the rest in the stock market. Now compare that to your monthly mortgage payment.
