Why do some of you think it’s so important to own a house?

Genuinely curious why it’s so important to you all.

It can’t be to get sloots. No prime hbb sloot in her 20-25’s is walking away from Chad because he’s renting.

So what is it that’s so important to you miscers about it?

Yeah because you buy a house to impress sloots lmao.

Even though I'm a rentcel I'm not proud of it and want to own my home one day.

Knowing your secure and have a roof over your head if anything goes wrong in life, no one can kick you out, save money on stupid bills and can sell it for double the price to make profit. Must be life affirming tbh.

That’s why I’m asking. Obviously it’s not to impress sloots. So then what is it?

You do know the majority of homeowners don’t own their house outright? They can absolutely get kicked out. Not to mention property taxes even if it is paid off in full.

Ask the misc homeowners here how many of them have fully paid off their home. Very few will have, so that security you speak of can’t be it either.

Yeah but the misc isn’t in here bragging how much they contribute/max out their 401k

And im not hating on home owning either. I plan to buy one soon. But it’s not that big of deal over renting to me either… so really not sure how sides got so divided on this topic of all things

When you through a process of buying a home, part of that is going to the lawyers office to get the deed of the property transferred to you. Doesn't matter if you have a mortgage; you become the legal owner of the home.

Idk my grandparents have a huge one they built on a bunch of land in the 70's we have tons of cars, audio stuff, home theaters and a huge garage over there

Over time, in most markets, it's the simplest way for the average person to build equity. Think of it as a forced savings plan that will appreciate in value over the long haul. If you have a proven track record of building wealth in other ways then do that. If not, buy a house.

Just by owning a home I've been able to increase my wealth 6x without even trying, all the while having a place to live. If youre disciplined you could possibly do that with other investments, but keep in mind this is tax free profit.

Some people view it as a big milestone. I have a couple of college friends who have been generally unsuccessful in life so far(some comically so), but they got married and own homes so they delude themselves into believing they are successful because of it.

I view a house as a place to crash, nothing more. A primary residence is not an investment, it's a liability. I keep my housing costs as low as possible.

I want one because

1. I want a bigger place with more rooms
2. I want to get the hell away from people living above, below, and one wall away from me.
3. I want a yard so I can get a doggo (apartments are no place for medium to large doggos)


I still don’t view it as better than renting though, just different needs.

Things I’ll miss from renting is the quick access to the apartment gym for morning cardio (yeah I can buy gym equipment for house but it’s nice to see 1 or 2 other people down there doing cardio too)

Maintenance fixing stuff for me, easier to heat and cool a smaller space, and closer proximity to stores.


Definitely ready for the house but it’s not all positives either.

A house is a liability. However, compared to paying rent it often makes sense to own. In my city that isn't actually the case. I keep thinking about buying a condo downtown to live it up for a couple more years before potentially settling down, and every time I run the numbers it would actually be cheaper for me to rent that same condo.
