Dji mavic mini2 crew checking in

Super fun, good enough photos, and a significant improvement over the mini1 (which I had)

The 1 would blow away at the slightest gust of wind and the 2 has yet to fail me

I live right behind a US Army/National Guard compound and have wanted to buy a drone to see what's behind the covered fences. Haven't done it yet because I don't want any form of government knocking on my door.

I also live 4-5 miles away from an international Airport. Anyone know if I could get in trouble for flying one out of my backyard?

That would be interesting lol. And you can fly up to 400 feet.

If the drone is less than .55 pounds you don’t need a license

they're fun - seeing stuff from an aerial view is super neat, but more so when it gives you a reason to explore new parks/places out in nature (not all allow, though)

if your drone gets too much out of sight or it's dark/windy be careful for your drone's sake

Good idea I want to take some footage in the mountains this summer. I’ll probably buy a better one by then

I think I have it at my parent’s house since my dad wanted to use it to check his roof for broken shingles. All the pics are on its sd card

Go to the dji subreddit and filter posts by mini and mini2. You’l find a metric f ton of non professional clueless user photos so you’l have a good baseline to refer to


As for what makes it better, idk, the build quality, the software, the specs. The fact that it’s 249 grams and has like a 3 mile range. So you don’t need to register it, can fly it anywhere (not legally but it isn’t bound by the onboard gps bounded software). 250+ grams and it has to be registered and you can’t fly them anywhere cool

Personally I think the right way to get into it as a hobby is
- buy something for $50 or less. Learn how to fly it and break it without much sadness
- buy a mini2 to lean how to fly further distances, flight rules, how to take cinematic photos
- get a mavic pro3. I stopped before here because I just don’t use it as much as I thought i would

2 grand for a mavic 3, geez this is an expensive hobby

You have to have a license to fly a drone for commercial reasons. So kimm4's sister using one for professional photography is most likely a federal violation, lol.

I'm a cop. I flew one for fugitive searches, search and rescue, aerial photographs of major crash scenes. FAA rules say government operations falls under commercial flights for whatever reason, so I needed to have a pilots license. I moved to a position that it wasn't something I was doing anymore so I didn't renew it.

FAA part 107 operator here

Have an Air 2S

Mostly fly in uncontrolled but sometimes in Class E. got ATC approval to get 1450ft off the right wing of a 737 for takeoff and landing shots a few months back which was cool

Do a lot of aerial stuff for real estate, scoping out new developments & whatnot, sometimes free drone videos for builders

Ran the idea by my chief of police like "hey, we could also use this...." & he seemed to be on board.

Of course you cant just have a drone - also have to have LR & know how to use it to make footage worth a chit.

It is. There's a test you have to pass that talks about nav charts, altitudes, how to read a METAR, maximum altitude you can fly, how far away from clouds to stay away, minimum vis needed to takeoff, etc.

You actually get a cool looking license from the FAA.
