It’s as much a sport as snooker or darts.

Those are no longer sports.

The definition of a sport has to do with skill, involving physical exertion in a completion.

As an example, jews used to be huge in basketball. Then, the game started using foot tall players and now you aren't going to find jews play, Mexicans, Japanese, and so on. That's because basketball is not a game of skill but a game about the size of the players.

So, any game where only a narrow range of people BORN A CERTAIN WAY can play is not a real sport. It's an activity for tall people, short people, etc.

You view is retarded and mine is rational.

lmao I guess basically nothing at any high/professional level is a sport by your criteria.

What a moronic post.

I don't know much about snooker but you have to know how to actually shoot the shots on purpose. It's not super physical but you have to have the coordination to make the shots you plan to shoot.

Please tell me how many people could become a pro basketball player without having been born the typical height?

Nearly no one in a world of 7 billion people could become a player.

It does not require skill as much as height.

You have no argument and are an idiot, lol.

Some of the stuff being done on vert ramps now is completely mental. As hard as skating street is, getting good on a full size halfpipe is a whole other thing.

Snooker is the most mentally taxing game-especially the world championship-where to win it you have to win 10 frames in round one, 13 in round 2 & the quarters, 17 in the semis & 18 in the final.

Just because a small percentage of the population can play at a high level doesn't make it not a sport? lmao

And that doesn't mean the players that do play aren't skilled? I'm pretty sure the NCAA is filled with thousands of tall players and only a small percentage make it to the next level - What separates all these tall players? skill you moron

So, the deal is that probably out of 7 billion people MANY could learn how to play, practice, and get to be good at it.

Meanwhile, almost no one on Earth could do the same to be an American basketball player.

I don't think a sport is valid if only certain body types can do it. I have never used a skateboard but it looks like only very skinny, short, low center of gravity types excell. I am not sure a tall and heavy athletic person would have the same abilities.
Yes being a twink is the norm. I only know of 2 heavy set guys who are pros. Jamie Foy and Frankie Villani. And they're not even bloatlords, but they're definitley not twinks.

yea and Zion Wright as well. The only tall pro skaters I can think of are thin as the rail

Justin Figueroa looks so cool on the board though. His videos are like passion of the skate Christ. He laid down his body for our entertainment

I say if you consider technical skill, athleticism, and risk tolerance to be your 3 main criteria, then you would be hard pressed to find a sport that matches or beats skateboarding at a very high level. There are many sports that require more skill, more athleticism, or more willingness to injure yourself, but very few, if any, that combine all 3 to such an extent.

The Boss (Reynolds) is like 6'3" and one of the best to ever do it, but I would say the average pro is in the 5'9-5'11" range.

There is a bodybuilder skateboarder that is sick. Funny AF too, dude might be a miscer. More low impact tech type of skating

Depends what you mean by good-the tour is & always has been mostly full of also-rans who never win anything or come close to it. The truly great players don't number that many. The skill level where you have to think two shots ahead, maintain position, escape snookers & mental application required for getting kicks, audience distractions, potentially having your four frame lead wiped out in 25 minutes against a guy like O'Sullivan who can rattle off for tons in a row in no time is insane, as is the schedule.

They are both tiny guys.

That means skateboarding is an activity for tiny people.

That's awesome for tiny guys and fun to watch, but it's not something that just anyone can aspire to being great at through hard work and determination.

Regarding something like basketball, a bunch of people paying in a neighborhood is more of a real sport and professional basketball.

A bunch of random guys are probably going to be using their skill and conditioning vs massive height.

I know little about Snooker but I am assuming you aren't born to play Snooker and must want to then practice.

Yep-minimum of six to eight hours a day, 7 days a week really & the club tables are total garbage compared to the ones the pros play on. The best club player at your average snooker club with the larger pockets & cloths they use would be destroyed against probably the worst player on tour or at Qualifying School. Quite often one tournament ends on the Sunday & the next one starts on Monday & probably in a different country-so you will have to leave quickly after the media commitments & get on a plane, arrive late on the Monday & then play the next day most likely, or sometimes even arrive the same day & play later that day. Some events with shorter formats you will have to play two matches a day.

RE: to Adlerian's posts
You are right that most skaters are thin, although there is a very large wide range of heights, with none more common than another.
But there are outliers
Nick Dompierre was skating at an extremely high level then became a bodybuilder gigachad and still rips harder than most hometown heros even in major cities like NYC and LA
Mike Vallely is old school, but was jacked for the time
Brandon Biebel is a jacked shorter guy
Non of those guys are relevant to modern skating, but they were big 10+ years ago
A lot of skaters that actually are 6+ feet tall, do weigh 170lb+ that is thin and athletic, but not twink mode
A thing you have to consider as well is the chicken and egg outlook. Skater's aren't just "born" thin, they have, since childhood jumped up and down hundreds of times a day for a decade+, of course if that's your sport, it's going to reflect in your body type.

I skated when I was younger. BMX guys also do some gnarly stuff with some serious potential to wreck yourself. Just riding those bikes with the tiny frames is way harder than it looks. They're not like normal bikes.

Back in 2007 I was riding a 13.5 foot vert ramp in Pennsylvania, there was only one other guy riding it and he was on a BMX. I literally screamed out loud every run...in person standing on the coping it legit looks like they will die every time they launch above the coping.

The BMXer was Jamie Bestwick and he was such a chill dude considering the insanity he was pulling on the ramp.

I saw BMX'ers do some crazy stuff at the skatepark. Gained a whole new respect for those guys. You can wreck so hard too. So many ways to get your legs and feet tangled up in the frame and pedals or miss the handlebars. I can't imagine how insane someone like Jamie Bestwick would be in person.

I skated that same ramp once with Renton Millar...dude was doing padless kickflip indys 7 feet out like it was nothing. Again, super chill guy and we hung out for the long weekend. He was trying to give me tips and pointers and gave zero fukks that I was nowhere near his level...just stoked to skate with anyone. Pretty quiet guy but awesome sense of humour.

Was also skating with Mike Frasier once...he really blew my fukkin mind...didn't realize how technical he could go.

Skateboarding is arguably one of the hardest skill-cap sports. Aside from needing good balance and being in perfect control of your feet/body you also need a fairly big set of balls to really progress to the next level.

Its also a fairly degen sport with high risk low reward for anything.

I bmx at a sort of high level. Can backflip, tailwhip, and the biggest handrail I have done was a 22 set. Even then I look at some of my friends or people in the community and it gets pretty crazy, and i realize just how dog**** I am. I know lots of skateboarders and know very few that have had serious injuries. With bmx I cant find someone who has not had one. Then you start looking at snowboard and motocross and you start getting into death territory.

From pure physical athleticism I don't know if I would say these sports require a lot of it, but when it comes to technical skill and balls it gets pretty up there.

Blew my mind when I started talking to some of the BMX guys and they're telling me how much a good frame can cost. Had no idea that were so expensive.

I agree with you. Skating is dangerous, but serious injury to spin and head, for some reason, is rare- and by serious I mean the person will never be normal again. It might be because skating you're going relatively slow, really maxing out in the mid 20s but bmx, mountain biking, snowboarding, motocross, you're going 2-4 times as fast, so obviously more momentum, more force or impact. There's a reason in those sports helmets are the norm, while in skating, even transition skaters nowadays don't wear anything.
