Saturday Adventure at an Off-road Park

What’s up y’all? Hope everyone is having a kick ass weekend so far.
My buddies wanted to take me out for a “last hurrah” bros trip before the kiddo shows up so we went out to Hidden Falls and had a blast.
My buddies Gladiator is geared on 37s and my GX is on 35s and it really impressed me. Didn’t run into anything that he could do that I couldn’t. Their park has trails rated up to 5 stars and we did 3/4s of a 4 star. Definitely had a lot of rubbing (perks of running 35s on a 2.5in lift) and want an additional skid plate and rock sliders.
He should have some video soon so I’ll update with that but here’s a few pics.

And so far it’s been dead reliable however it’s fairly low miles (06 with 130k) and I picked it up recently from the 2nd owner. He bought it for his daughter, decked it out then she said it was too big for her lol. He’d dumped nearly 10k in it in mods.

I can’t take credit for it as if I built it I would’ve cheaped out and the PO really spared no expense. Everything he did was my style though.

No sir. The stage 4 trail I was getting nervous on. It was off camber and cut out so that you are off camber leaning towards a rock wall. Ended up having to back up and scoot right because it ended up leaning far enough my mirror touched the wall lol. Sketch city for sure. There were quite a few moments teetering too.
My buddies wife was worried for us as she’s used to how sure footed their gladiator is with the longer wheelbase and wider tract.

Haha I don’t drink but dinner definitely was.
Hot shower then had chicken fried steak, salad and fries. 10/10 wood recommend.

I've never done off roading like this, but I learned to drive on the beach in an old Mitsubishi Pajero (I think they are called Montaros in the US).

If you get the tides right (we always did, but some people don't even bother to check wtf) you could drive for an hour in a (almost) straight line in the hard packed sand below the tide line, and count the number of cars that pass on one hand. We often saw cars stuck in the soft sand above the tide line, or half sunk in the surf.

Once you get to the end of the beach it opens up and you can drive over the sand dunes. I'll never forget my dad shouting at me to point the car straight when going down the hill, I turned to avoid something and almost rolled it, lol.

Haha that sounds awesome man! Sand has always been my nemesis. I’ve buried my fair share of vehicles in sand as well as very loose gravel. And there was a dude on Texas Overland (back when I was still on FB) who was all about Monteros.

Used to run a 1981 Dodge Colt with a 4 on the floor on the logging roads. Poor little fukker would go anywhere. If it didn't I'd back down the hill and take another run at it. Once it was going 40 or 50 mph it would bounce and go airborne over the rough spots and wash outs.
Looked just like this one right down to the oxided red paint.


Without a doubt one of the greatest bush cars I've ever driven.

Lmfao that is nuts man, I had a buddy who used to take his Pontiac sunfire off-roading and it was impressive how far he could get. Momentum is key in that situation for sure. I had to bump it to get over some stuff today and one of my mud flaps almost got ripped off due to rubbing but we were able to pop it back on.

^^^^^ I think so. The Colt was made by mitsubishi. I don't remember my brakes being really bad, but I dont think they were great either. If I recall it was a 1600 cc in it.
2 barrel carb, and I think it still had points and not a electronic ignition.

Lol. This one the mud flaps were long gone, so was the muffler and most of the exhaust system. The gas tank was so caved in it would only hold about 3 gallons.
Once I had it airborne and landed on a pointed rock and pushed the driver side floor up about 6". Got a big rock off the roadside and beat it back down and off I went.

Winter 1998 I had this huge mud bog in the back yard doing donuts with it pissing off the neighbours. I later ran a 74 Jeep Wagoneer in there and got it stuck in there till spring. That fukking Colt would just float on top and make it's way through.

We’d have been buddies growing up for sure man. It’s hard to beat a cheap vehicle you can do whatever in.

Nice man! Those things are friggin tanks! My old boss had one and didn’t upgrade until just before I left his company. Think it was flirting with 400k and was starting to have electrical issues so he ended up buying a used LX570. He kept the other too afaik.

love the old chitbox cars posted ITT.

I once took an old ford ranger down a road here called "schnebly hill road" into Sedona. It was terrifying. When I felt the bottom scrape boulders I would get so nervous LOL.

It was just a rear wheel drive truck, and it somehow survived, but I had to replace the heater core after, I think it had gotten rattled loose.

Where did you find the GX OP? I'd love to come across a low mileage GX nicely modded that someone isn't trying to recoup the whole cost of the mods when selling.

My buddy found it on ********. Dude up in Austin listed it. He initially was asking 25 then I ended up picking it up for 22,5.
Not cheap for sure but similarly modded ones have been going for upwards of 30. The market is insane.

And I definitely get that man. This spot is an hour from my house so not too too far but it’s the closest actual off-road park and there isn’t much public land in TX.
I’ve had both sporty vehicles and off-roaders. One perk of the latter is less likely to end up getting tickets lol.
