For what value of "believe"?

Old Testament: allegorical stories, genealogical records, poetry, history, and religious beliefs recorded by a tribe of people

New Testament: history, parables, legends, letters, and predictions recorded and collected around the life of a historical figure at the center of a new religion

Kind of hard to discount Revelation in this clown world.
Freedom of speech is a principle pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved and tyranny is erected on its ruins.

At the very least the Bible is an incredible and unparalleled sociological/psychological commentary on human societies/nature/blueprint for fulfillment and happiness. There is a lot to be learned from it, it's a repository/aggregate (along with its attendant interpretations) of all human wisdom accumulated over millennia.

Yeah it's good that religious zealots have never tried to impose their beliefs on others

We still regularly receive personal-looking, hand-written and addressed envelopes from local Mormons

Bro if you think religious people trying to impose their (usually wholesome) beliefs on others is a meaningful problem in our clown world where we have non-stop society-wide pro-degeneracy propaganda emanating from every institution...you've got some serious perception issues.

Up until 2000 (or less) years ago. That’s a big gap in human development. I’d argue that any book missing the last 150 years of societal development is missing so much it borders on irrelevant.

Dude, you’re killing it in this thread. I’m not religious but the vast majority of those that I know who are are good people. We need more of that in society.

Do I think that somebody who follows a set of values based on the fear of god is as virtuous as someone who does the same one their own? No, but the result is the same. I think society needs religion now as much as it did 1000 years ago, even though I don’t actually believe in a god.

But the Bible isn't missing anything from the last 150 years. The things like peace, love, joy, patience, meekness, longsuffering are still relevant today. The opposite of that is sin, sins like adultery, fornication, anger, wrath, murder, lasciviousness. There's nothing new under the sun and won't be. The Bible is still relevant today and will be 1500 years from now.

That's a insignificant time frame when it comes to evolution. Our underlying human nature (on a biological basis) is unchanged from that era, the lessons therefore remain universally relevant to us as a species. And you're discounting ongoing and modern interpretations which frame the teachings of the Bible in the context of the modern era.

At least people are owning their degeneracy in modern times. Religion and its varying vaunted beliefs have long served as a facade, touted by practitioners who claim to follow teachings founded in human decency etc but then who are still human and just as inclined towards degeneracy as anyone else.

Beyond that, trying to impose these belief systems on others is probably the #1 cause of suffering and death throughout human history.

People can claim to be holier than thou based on their true actions in life, both seen and unseen. People who speak very loudly about their fantastical beliefs and how great they are, well I’d sooner assume they’re overcompensating rather than approaching sainthood.

I would argue that if participating in/adhering to a set of beliefs, customs, and ceremonies contributes to individual and collective societal well-being, it becomes irrational (and selfish, especially if we accept that there are positive network affects to participation) to not publicly buy-in. Underlying belief in its divine nature becomes irrelevant to an extent in this framework (although I'd also argue, self-evident given the positive outcomes it yields).
