How Could You Be So Stupid?

When his proudly unvaccinated brother-in-law was hospitalized with COVID-19, Richard Russo had long since lost sympathy for coronavirus skeptics. Then he remembered his father.

Decades ago, Russo’s father woke up with a stiff neck. Rather than seeing a doctor, he used an industrial solvent given to him by a horse trainer to relieve the pain. And it worked! He considered himself fortunate to know a guy with access to a miracle cure. Months later, however, Russo’s father learned that the cause of the stiff neck was lung cancer. It’s a shame he didn’t come in sooner, the doctor told him.

“One of the problems with screaming ‘How could you be so stupid?’ at people who behave stupidly is that we too often think of the question as rhetorical when it isn’t,” Russo writes. This applies to COVID-vaccine hesitancy. Though not getting the shot is often seen as political, that’s not necessarily the case. It also correlates to lack of health care and resources, which can lead people to make alternative (and sometimes “foolish”) medical choices, as Russo’s father did.
The irony is that many people who behave foolishly consider themselves to be “in the know,” to be in possession of inside knowledge; access to it, for them, is a point of pride.

The vaccines are apparently only somewhat effective against the delta variant which has since been superceded by the omicron variant and in which case the vaccines are not effective at all
