Ded fk'n serious
Well my experience (posted on the previous page) was exactly that; you need the qualifications before you get the experience. Most companies I have dealt with will not train or take a gamble on an employee who shows promise. Boomers like in op male it seem a lot easier than it is, call others lazy for not going down the same road that largely doesn't exist anymore

Certain people, yourself included, are just insistent on making it about that, despite my adament repitition that that is absolutely not the point of the thread at all.

"Work harder" is a misc meme, so it's to be expected. Thought it would be easier for most people to overcome that barrier and simply be able to make a rational observation about the state of the job market right now.

There is no way that a typical career arc in 2022 is "start an entry-level tradie position in a global market leader corporation and-- without acquiring any additional credential or qualification-- work hard for 20 years and you will be an executive of that exact same company."

Economic expansion was the secret to boomer success. This allows for upwards growth and mobility. The state of the last 4 decades has been stagflation and finite growth.

People act like getting a degree is hard.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Getting a degree is not hard, most people in college are idiots that care more about parties.

It's affording a degree that's difficult

I mean, obviously the opportunity to move upward exists. I've done it myself. And sure, it's competititve as phuck-- whatever.

I'm really blown away at the people ITT who can't see that it would be anomolous af to the point of nearly impossible for a person with zero qualification, today, to get a job as an unskilled laborer in a market-leading/strategic industry and work their way up to executive leadership within one company in a timespan or 20 years without acquiring any additional qualification or credential. This boomer was telling me his story with the company was not atypical.

Marveling at that fact is directly analogous to whining that I am unsatisified with the returns I've seen on the hard work I've done in my career, despite repeating over and over again that I am very satisified with the returns I've seen on the hard work I've done in my career.

It's not really about the degree, I agree. If you pay for one year of uni and work your angus off you can get the next three years paid for on scholarship-- it's not rocket science. And frankly, getting a degree isn't really that big of a barrier in terms of raw IQ required, I also agree. But it's the dog and pony show that society has largely agreed is required for executive leadership in the business world.

And I'm not just talking about some libchit BA in Gender-centric Basketweaving or whatever. Most O&G jobs on that link ExPatriot posted want 5+ years in the energy sector plus a degree in a relenvant field. Doesn't mean I'm not going to send out some applications today (srs), because as donblaximus said the time is right, they are losing valuable people, and the last time I sent in an application was probably a year ago, during which time I've been promoted to a far more mogging title, gotten a fat raise, received several new relevant-ish certifications, and learned a whole lot about the field.

Yeah brah, he was telling me that tons of the dudes he came up in the refinery went even higher than him. He was kind of blown away that I was so impressed with his career tbh and he stressed (as I have mentioned ITT already while you called me a whiner). Again, impressed with, not jealous of.

The purpose of the thread was, I repeat again, to collectively marvel at the kinds of opportunities that were available to boomers career-wise, surely it's not that difficult to grasp right? It's not. But it can be expensive or time consuming. There are lots of factors to consider unless you're already being funded right out of HS.

This.

It can't be that hard because I've work with a lot of educated idiots within IT.

Bingo. When I first started out in tech I knew consolidated storage was going to be the next huge thing. I took any job at a major tech company just to get my foot in the door and I was on the call center selling computers to mom and pop businesses. At nights....id go to the storageville engineering lab and made friends with the engineers working on the future. They eventually let me have access to some test equipment and i taught myself how to design and set up storage. Thats how I gained my knowledge before I showed up to the consulting interview. They asked me "how do you know so much about the details of storage when you are currently selling desktops to mom and pop shops?" I told them how......they put me on the team immediately.

Remember......leaders are looking for athletes. They dont have to be turn key ready all the time. Potential sometimes is all you need to show.

No I don't believe every single one of them became C-level execs lmfao obviously brah-- he wasn't a C-level exec either. He was lower, like I said, I didn't get his exact job title (I'd estimate it to be something like VP of Regional Operations, US South, or something to that effect. I certainly know it was on the business side and he was at least steering at the regional level. That is non-trivial advancement which he described as typical, and I believe would be extremely atypical today.

The same opportunities are available. The only difference is the requirements now. Or am I misunderstanding the points being argued here?

And you dont think this generation has exponentially more opportunity? Where you can literally build your own brand and company without needing millions of dollars in corporate backing to start your business in a hyper connecting world?

The game has certainly changed yes. Gone are the days where you can start in the mail room and make it to SVP. I agree. But why would you want that? You can start at CEO of your own company in this new gig economy. Thats what I am preparing my kids for. I feel like I was unlucky having to spend time in corporate america.

Oh phuck yeah I do brah, I've already conceded that point. Frankly, I would much rather work for myself than some corporation anyway. I just find the energy sector to be absolutely fascinating and I'd like to work in it one day and there is no way you're gonna start your own oil business in 2022 I don't think lmfao (inb4 boomer browbeating about bootstraps), so if you want to make it in that industry, you have to play by their rules.

Like I said, your message that there is opportunity for IT in the industry right now has encouraged me to send out some applications today, which I haven't done for a while. I really like my job and I'm on an upward track there already and it's in a cool industry that I really like, so for the 100th time, I'm not bitter about the changes to the game or desperately searching for a legit job.

Good on you bro....I do recall you mentioning earlier in this thread Shell wanted to see documentation of all the things you claim. Is there a problem with that? When I was in the game, I would proactively send that stuff. That only lasted a short while.......then people would come to me vs the other way around.

One perspective you might change. What exactly do you want to do in the energy business? What is the end goal?
Hint - you can own a tech company that happens to sell TO the energy industry as an end state goal.

Why do boomers all seethe immediately if you point out that the economic conditions of their generation were far more favorable to the worker than in modern times?

No, no, not at all I don't fraud my qualifications. The point is just that this is all totally par for the course on the modern job market.

And what's my goal? I'm a data analyst brah. O&G has a lot of data that needs analyzing, and it's all interesting as phuck. The problems being solved in such a volatile and important industry interest the phuck out of me.

The problem is that you still subscribe to the hyper-modern view of employment/hiring, that being spraying resumes everywhere for HR sloots to sort through. That's not how anybody gets hired to a position that a human drone couldn't do. Anybody in any real decent position got referred, headhunted, or was promoted up from within the company. HR busy work "recruiting" is to fill chairs with people to do the generic jobs that anybody could do.

Nah dude I don't really spray my resume. I find a specific position I want, I write a resume and cover letter for that position and then I figure out who the hiring manager is and get in touch with them directly. I have pretty good applicant game.

Also, to be fair, I have been recruited to most of the jobs I've worked in IT.

This. There used to be more meaningful work to be done than there was people for. Now it's the opposite.

There's hundreds of millions of people doing bullchit jobs that could be automated tomorrow, but won't because of societal disruption.

The funniest part is all people do is whine and complain about millenials and zoomers, especially boomers, but when you hit back at them they just tell you you're entitled or complaining. The thing about boomers is that they will die never taking responsibility for destroying the fabric of the our nations, and will never admit to any wrong doing. They always worked the hardest, had it the hardest, were the strongest, manliest, and never ever complained or whined. They're the original narcissists. That's why so many kids these days are narcissists because they learned from their parents behavior. So when a boomer points at these kids and calls them entitled, narcissistic, lazy, or soft, they literally created and raised their children to be that. Most of them can't even work a computer or tv properly and have to call their kids to do it.

Boomers are fascinating creatures. Just let them live in their glory days and dream world of days past. If you want to piss them off and troll them, just talk about how much more difficult the world is nowadays and how we have to work much harder for what we have. They'll melt down. Say you would have been a millionaire by now if you grew up when they did. Watch them self destruct.

The game has certainly changed yes. Gone are the days where you can start in the mail room and make it to SVP. I agree. But why would you want that? You can start at CEO of your own company in this new gig economy. Thats what I am preparing my kids for. I feel like I was unlucky having to spend time in corporate america.
This is the golden egg here. While millenials and zoomers have a much more intricate and difficult social, cultural, and general path of life and much more economic troubles, we also have insane opportunity. I'm in the process of starting my own service based company and I can scale it probably 100x faster than in the 80s to make much more money simply because of things like yelp, google, websites, ********, next door apps, etc. Kids made 6 and 7 figures from a meme coin. The amount of money kids make on youtube, tik tok, etc is absurd. The amount of information we have at our finger tips is absurd.

The whole reason why people hate boomers is that they will never admit the younger generations have much more difficulties in other areas, nor take responsibility for their failures that they put on everyone else. I've met very few that have. They are quick to point out our easy aspects of our lives while never admitting to the difficulties that they literally created for us. That's why kids started that "ok boomer," phrase and it took off. This isn't just some random thing. Everyone knows boomers are delusional because they are stuck in their glory days and destroyed the future of our nation simply by their greed. Remember, kids are a reflection of their parents and elders. That's why I always laugh when they call out the generation they raised for being soft or horrible.

Not only that but when you try to show them how to work a device like a TV remote they say "no, no.. just fix it" with zero intention to learn how themselves

Desktop PC's have commonly been around since the 90's; it's time to learn how to use a web browser

Makes you wonder if their generation was always like that..

I was willing to teach myself, why do they refuse to

My dad, three uncles, and two cousins are boomers. For high school graduation, they were given and all expenses paid trip to a tropical paradise named Vietnam.

I don’t believe the boomers had it as easy as some of you would like to believe.
