Do you have a gym nemesis?

If you're looking for a long quasi boring story of gym wrong doers then you've come to the right place.

I don't like to complain, but I will.

I'm your average upper 40's guy who still lifts. Although my demeanor isn't necessarily friendly, I try to be very respectful of those around me. Sure, I say nothing. Avoid eye contact to discourage all forms of social interaction, and don't come off as approachable, but I am never in your way.

Piss poor etiquette has really been grinding my gears. One fat older guy is the undisputed champion, although he is blind to his ways. If he were a social butterfly, his name would be Mothra. While I refuse to chat with him (and every so often he tries) it still impacts my lifting in many ways.

If he's on a piece of equipment, it's off the table for a good 20 -30 minutes easily. 1 set, then a good ten minutes of talking ti follow. The other day Ivwas waiting for cross cables. Another older dude was on them. It was unusually crowded and unusually chatty. I had already done the vast majority of my workout in a random order to keep things moving. I needed to do a few more things all with the cables. So theirs my gym nemesis talking up a storm. I was pacing in the background waiting impatiently. After 10 minutes or so someone asked me if I was on something in the area, I said no I'm waiting for the cables. The guy left.

His crimes are many. When I'm doing dumbell presses gym nemesis stands close to me. It's a gray area most times. Not so close I can't do my thing, but much closer then necessary when a lot of space is available. This typically happens when he finds someone to talk to.

On multiple occasions, when it's generally uncrowded, I will be on an end bench with 3 wide open spaces. My weights will be in front on the bench and I walk back and forth in the area like a vulture. Nemesis will come over, grab a 5lb weight, and do a set of 30 standing 1 foot awaybfeim the rack, and 2 feet in front of my bench.

I've been tempted several times to say something, but I never do for several reasons. When I'm annoyed saying something will come off douchy, because I'm not particularly social I don't want the only thing I say to be confrontational, and the don't **** where you eat mentality. He's not a BAD guy, he's just annoying.

I'm bored. Am I being a whiny bitch? A little. The first step is accepting it.

Anyone else have fellow lifters that they'd like to see in Gitmo? I couldn't tell you who the strongest guy in the gym is, or the weakest. But I can always point out the people in the way.

After 10 minutes this thread will self destruct...

no but some of my pet peeves -

1. stand or lift directly on/in front of the dumbbell rack.
2. smell - wear cologne or have B.O. in the gym.
3. use the ONE pull-up bar - machine assist to do glute leg press downs or arm press downs when i want to do pull-ups.
4. grab and hoard 6+ sets of dumbbells.
5. finish their workout but then come over and start talking you up forever when you're just trying to start.
6. leave trash or water bottles or stuff in people's way.
7. use a bench as a personal storage shelf when people need one to lift.
8. roll around on a mat for 10 minutes doing nothing and leave.
9. place said mat at the foot of my pull-up bar.
10. spend more time frantically spraying and wiping than actually working out (Boomers).

I guess I'm lucky I don't have to deal with those types in the gym. The type I usually have to deal with are the old people, the fat people, the gym noobs who show up once a month or whenever they remember the gym exists, they show up and just take up gym real estate with their half-assery. Walk on treadmills, pedal on stationary bikes, keeping everyone on the level one resistance. Then they go to the weight machines. Set up the chest press with 25s on each side, very casually do the movement. They obviously have it in them to add more weight but nah fuk that.

The absolute worst are the gym couples who show up and piss everyone off with their #CouplesGoals workouts. Had some noodle-armed guy with his girlfriend come up, they both get on a flat bench, he straddles the bench right behind her, spotting her while she does 10 or 15 lb shoulder presses. Of course I wanted to use that bench but had to wait.

So basically all in all my nemeses are the people who just show up to the gym so they can say they went to the gym, and just waste time with bull**** non-workouts. You're just wasting everyone's time here, gtfo...

I had this one Chinese guy who used to go to the gym the same time and days I did and only do compounds. No probs with that, I was mainly doing compounds too, but the gym was small and only had 1 squat rack and if old mate got there first he would legit do a minimum of 8 sets per exercise with long breaks in between. Sure I could have asked to work in with him, but I started to develop an irrational hatred of him, plus I caught him picking his nose in between sets, and I didn't wanna touch the bar after him. Thought I would avoid him by going different days but fuk me stupid, he was there on those days too. God I hated him lol

I used to until i realised that the problems that i have with other people i the same problem that they or other people have with me.

Now when somebody is being overbearing or domineering, i see it for what it is and stay away if communication doesn't work.

These are usually people with their own agenda - i know because i used to be one.

There is NOTHING you can do except avoiding them or shunning them, because they're prepared for anything you throw their way as part of their game.

after reading your OP again, you need to stop being a beta b*tch and just ask him for the machine - what are you 12?

I worked out at a gym in La Mirada in 2014 and a guy trained with his teenage kid, and they would do barbell curls right in front of the barbell rack, so nobody else could grab a barbell. I was in the same situation you were in, OP

It's nice that you've found a gym that accommodates senior citizens such as yourself
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I think that's a legitimate story OP, we can all relate

mine is a dude, probably my age (30's). Smells like ****ing ****, wears the same outfit 5 days a week.
He curls for an hour (no kidding), at the ****ing cable machine that is. He'll do shoulder press something on the smith, but that's about it.

I don't know what the **** he listens to, but he keeps banging his head and playing air guitar. His whole demeanor is ****ing cringe,
he acts like he's ****ing metal or on coke, like he walks around super hyper and looks at everyone as if we were all looking for trouble. He stares at himself in the most annoying way, like you could be in front of a mirror and he'll still stare at himself right next to you.
Every time he comes in, he eats a banana IN THE ****ING GYM. Like he couldn't do it in his car, he's probably too ****ing dumb and relies on some broscience where he needs to get his carbs in seconds before his workout.
Twice he dropped his peel halfway in the trash, so you had to dodge it to throw something in the trash.

Everything about him disgusts me, and the fact that he never once had legs day reminds me how much of a b1tch he really is.
I stared at him once, he was reeking and sweaty af (just doing curls, how do you even achieve that). For a moment I thought he was going to jump me, but I couldn't resist.

Looking back at this, he was doing his thing, and he struck me as a lonely guy. These days I'm just ignoring him. I spent too much energy raging at him, now I just let him be
and focus on my own stuff.

Don't have a nemisis but get annoyed by the same old guy who uses equipment for an hour at a time. And the younger crowd who lift in massive groups and take up all the cables and don't put anything away when they finish. Usually just walk up and take their chit when I don't see them using it for more than a few minutes. But I get my chit done and am finished before they even notice.

I wouldn't ask someone to get off a machine, then you're the douche. He would absolutely let me work in, but no chance. He would definitely be chatting me up, and want to socialize. He's a nice guy, but I dont like him.

Its the misc, of course I'm being a bitch. In real life I just carry on and ignore him, but its a consistent thing.

Its like death by a 1000 cuts! By not calling him out I'm not being a bitch, I'm being nice. If I said **** I would be bullying him. And he would share the story with anyone willing to lend an ear.

If you are a wise old ape, then you know besides bitching on the misc my options are limited.

I'm probably not well liked already, which I'm fine with. I don't want to give people a real reason to dislike me.

had an old late 50s tattooed reverse Yankess hat Bloatlord today piss me off. there's room for about 6 benches in front of the dumbbell rack. sometimes a bench goes missing. Bloatlord is on a bench at the far end taking up two bench spaces. i go grab the missing bench and bring it over and place it next to Bloatlord's bench without asking because he didn't look up so i said f**k it. also remember - Bloatlord is taking up 2 spaces. so as i proceed with my dumbbell presses, Bloatlord stands next to my bench and starts doing shoulder presses. i completely ignored him and just did my lifts right next to him. eventually Bloatlord moved over.

what i can't understand is how rude and selfish some people are. i go out of my way to make room for people. other people just care about themselves. no etiquette, no courtesy, no self awareness.

Yeah this kind of oblivious mouth-breather behavior drives me crazy too, and my MO in the gym is basically the same as yours-- get in, get my workout done, get out, and interact with as few people as possible.

I get that not everyone takes the gym seriously, that's fine. But stop being an obstacle to the people around you because you dgaf about lifting according to a plan/schedule.

Dude you sound like a fkn loser - who even thinks that far ahead? You just walk up to somebody, ask them how long they have left and then go from here.

Slow ****s monopolizing, or even just using, equipment you want happens all the time, to everyone.

Solution I use is having a couple of different variations on whatever workout I'm doing. So in your own example if you plan to use cables, just don't this once and use dumbells or something else instead.

Fkn hate this. Don't use an adjustable bench to hold your dumbbells in between sets of cheat curls ffs.

Oh and fkn lateral raises can be done anywhere. Don't do them next to people that are pressing heavy dumbbells.

This. I'm not dragging 135lb dumbells to a bench to do rows in a less convenient position

Yes - this can happen a lot, it's usually men testing other men for whatever reason or other men just bored and want to try to annoy you.

It has happened to me a few times, I'm just minding my own business doing a set and another guy who enters the gym - will straight away come to the area your in, stand behind you in the mirror, stand really close to you and do a set. It so obvious but what can you do - it's a public gym

I guess one day I might flip and just "What the **** do you want, **** off leave me alone and let me do my workout"- and knock the person out if Im having a bad day

I've also got the young ones that don't put any of their stuff away and train in groups, doing a million curl variations. I also get a lot of people asking me mid set whether I'm using something that is over the other side of the gym. If it's free it's yours. **** supersetters.

It's clear to me now, you're that guy. You're not serious in the gym, you stand around talking, curl a foot off the rack, and probably hover over people without a care in the world.

Again, it's the misc. Making mountains outbof molehills is part of the process.

The fact that my complaining about rude fat fuks has you name calling is revealing. What are you 12?

Fkn hate this. Don't use an adjustable bench to hold your dumbbells in between sets of cheat curls ffs.

Oh and fkn lateral raises can be done anywhere. Don't do them next to people that are pressing heavy dumbbells.
1. don't block the rack.
2. yeah come to think of it - that's actually reverse Yankees cap old tattooed Bloatlord was doing - lateral raises right next to my bench when he was already taking up two spaces. rude, selfish, inconsiderate. and he hogged the spaces for 2 hours. i just try to do my workout and ignore these people but damn it's distracting and irritating. and you have these people at almost every gym. what i don't get is how people that have been going to a gym for years and years still have not learned basic gym etiquette.

I used to get annoyed by people who would flop around playing air guitar/air drums or would scream as loud as they could every single rep. I realize they're doing their own thing now and just ignore them. There are the guys who will come right next to you for no reason and start doing an exercise, but I usually just talk with them and they'll move a couple of feet away. Then you have the guys who want to chat the whole time you're there. I just give short, polite answers and they understand I don't want to talk while I'm lifting.

What I can't ignore, no matter how hard I try, are the people who leave dumbbells and bars on the floor and weights on all the machines they use. I try to ignore them but have got into it a few times.
