Israel has reacted with fury after Russia's foreign minister claimed that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler "had Jewish blood".

Sergei Lavrov made the comments to try to justify Russia's portrayal of Ukraine as "Nazi" despite the fact that its president is Jewish.

Israel's foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador for "clarification" and demanded an apology.

Mr Lavrov made the remarks in an interview on Italian TV programme Zona Bianca on Sunday, days after Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, one of the most solemn occasions in the Israeli calendar.

When asked how Russia can claim that it is fighting to "de-Nazify" Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelensky is himself Jewish,Mr Lavrov said: "I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. [That Zelensky is Jewish] means absolutely nothing. Wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews."

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said: "Such lies are meant to blame the Jews themselves for the most terrible crimes in history and thus free the oppressors of the Jews from their responsibility.

"No war today is the Holocaust or is like the Holocaust."

Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid reacted angrily, calling Mr Lavrov's words "unforgivable".

"Most of his remarks are absurd, delusional, dangerous and deserving of any condemnation," he tweeted. "Lavrov deals with the reversal of the Holocaust: turning the victims into criminals, based on the promotion of a completely unfounded claim that Hitler was of Jewish descent."
I've heard he had a Jewish grandfather. Friends teachers even taught along those lines lol. Self hatred is pretty common anyways

A lot of people have Jewish blood, I’m a non-practicing member of the tribe, but definitely not a fan of the relationship the US has with Israel, probably going to Jew hell (even though most don’t believe in hell, explains some things) now lolol

And why not support the relationship? Our best ally and have done so much for us, and you want to leave them out to dry? Legitimately unpatriotic to not support them the way they support us. I thought it was somewhat common knowledge that Hitler was an Austrian jew? Why would Israelis be mad? The land they have now was stolen from other ppl. Israel was established after WW2 ended bc no one wanted to take them into their own country. That's why they put them there lol

Don’t get me wrong, the holocaust was terrible and inhuman. But to call it the worst thing in history?

I mean, pol pot actually carried out a successful genocide (believe not one person of viet descent survived).

And that is just modern history - list could go on and on if we go back past 1900s

I don’t understand the huge controversy here. Growing up I heard the “Hitler was a self hating Jew” narrative all the time, actually with quite a bit of seriousness including in school like OP mentions. While it may not be historically accurate, I suspect it stems from Hitler’s infatuation with blonde haired blue eyed Aryan features despite being a dark haired, brown eyed man himself.

Conspiracy or not, I also heard he was a secret ph@g. Also heard he escaped to South America, though with less seriousness. Point is, he was an infamous historical figure who naturally became the subject of much speculation.

If they really wanted to troll they'd have admitted that Russian forces never confirmed Hitlers death and they just rolled with that to end the war.



Might be kind of a harsh troll on the world/every WWII Vet though. As he most likely lived out his days in peace and tranquility.
