that wasn't something I looked into greatly but when I did our family tree I found one distant relative though owning a couple slaves. He was a judge in SC.

It was kind of interesting in that the sister's son apparently protested the southern government during the Civil War. After the Civil War he sued the government for loses incurred when general Sherman's army camped on his farm on its way to Atlanta. The union army took most of his farm animals and vegetables held in storage. (The lawsuits against the government by southerns after the war was common I've read.) My ancestor lost his court case against Sherman's army sadly. He had been drafted or forced into the home guard for a few months. That was enough for his case to be dismissed by the army.
