Anyone ever suffer from Runner's knee?

Was doing my usual mile and on the last step my left knee did not like it and the pain was uncomfortable enough to go buy a knee brace to help support my knee, hurts to go down steps, get into my car or any movement to keep it elevated it doesn't very good.

Anyone here go thru that and what did you do to help the discomfort? I iced it on my lunch and have kept the brace on while at work now.

Might call off tomorrow to try to see a doctor just to be sure nothing else is going on.

You have to do lower body weight training. Squats, hamstrings, quads, calves for hypertrophy.

Whenever my knees hurt after a run it’s my cue I should’ve replaced my shoes a month ago. Get new shoes.

That said if only a mile is bothering you, maybe just LDAR

Yea.....everytime I run.

But I broke my right knee 2wice in the last 15 years, so that's probably why.

Ice it, stay off it for a couple days and see where you're at. Any fluid buildup, pain to the touch, loose patella? Does it hurt when you put weight on it or just when you put torsion on it? What shape are your shoes in?

Yeah skipped the gym today, the pain seems to be right on/under the knee cap, dont see any fluid build up but hard for me to tell. I can walk fine but when I go down some steps I need to move gingerly

Not entirely sure on the shape of the shoe honestly but I do want to get something else that isn't nike running shoes

A Doc told me to do the leg extension machine but do the last 30 degrees of it from 3/4 done to the top, and repeat.
Sets of 15 with light weight to strengthen the areas around the patella.
I also wear neutral Cushion shoes, so get fitted for shoes if you have not already.
Lastly my dad believed in running on softer surfaces.
Grass is the best, a rubberized track is 2, an asphalt road is 3, and concrete is the worst.

good luck

Appreciate the advice my man, I do need new shoes definitely, any personal suggestions you have for shoes?

My gym has an indoor track so its not concrete or asphalt but its not as rubbery as a track in my opinion

I did once a long time ago, but not anymore after I started using minimalist/barefoot running shoes.

Those shoes encourage me to doforefoot strike (FFS)landing.

Not every time but I just alternately use normal shoes and minimalist/barefoot ones.

It takes some time to get used to them but it will eventually.

Maybe not for everyone but it's worth a try.

"Modern running shoes have become increasingly cushioned that altered our footstrike pattern from a predominantly forefoot strike (FFS) landing to a predominantly rearfoot strike (RFS) landing. This change may be contributing to the high rate of injuries runners experience while engaged in an activity for which they were adapted."

I used all of the futuristic lasers and high tech foot measuring devices at this store, then i tried on shoes and left with nike.
This is very specific to your foot and angles of foot strike so, if you don't have one near you, then find out where all the race guys shop for running shoes in your city.

Do you strike as a supinator, over pronator or neutral?

Yes I am going through this right now, i had it twice before. Mine is a sharp pain on the outside of my left knee when i bend it so mostly stairs and getting up from a seating position. Its an IT Band issue and honestly I gave up trying to fix it previously because it seemed nothing worked and stopped running for years. I started running again last year and I'm not happy its back. Supposedly its caused from over training and weak glute/hip muscles. I'm doing hip exercises and taking a week off. I plan on Monday doing light sprints on a grassy field before any attempt of going back to regular running. My pain is on the outside of the knee and not under the knee cap so could be different issues entirely. Good luck.

been dealing with it for 2.5 years. have grade 3 chondromalacia patella.

you should RICE and stretch your quads and stretch hip internal/external rotation. i'm guessing it's probably not a strength issue since this is a weightlifting form.

also consider orthotics, as over pronation can throw off gait mechanics.

the knee is a simple hinge joint that is at the mercy of the foot and the hips. this is usually where the problem lies.

yeah I went to a knee doctor and they ruled out any structural damage with xrays and stuff, it was a muscle imbalance and muscle tightness, sent me to physical therapy. Those guys were legit coudl see that my knees were trackign wrong, my illodial bands were tight, my hanstrings were tight and basically pulling my knees to the side. Gave me the stretches and exercises I had to do.

Was running with minimally stretching and also doing leg presses, minimal stretching, ignoring other leg muscle groups. Cut off all leg presses, did stuff for my hamstrings, did leg extensions, the last rang of motion part of them and a bunch of stretches. It helped a lot.

Also went to a different physical therapist for my back/shoulders a few years later and those guys sucked balls, barely paid any attention to you, had multiple patients going at once not one on one.

It can be a strength imbalance though.

A GOOD physical therapist can tell whats going on. luck of the draw if you get someone good or a retard.

Build your glutes, use single leg squats to help with knee tracking. Focus on ankle mobility and do more spanish squats.

Worst running shoe I ever got was from a fitting lol. Until I am a couple miles in a run you have no idea how good the shoe it, but over time they all break in.

I had meniscis issues several years back and had it cleaned up, regret doing it now without trying to do some rehab on my own first. Glute work definitely helps take pressure off the knee, or it did in my case. I'd also recommend following some of the Knees Over Toes Guy's stuff...I don't think you need to buy his program as he puts enough stuff out there for free. Every time I get a knee tweak anymore I resort to doing some of those excersizes when I have time and it helps.

Honestly not sure how my feet are as far as striking or my tendencies are I just run lmao I don't do long distance runs like I used too in high school but I'm starting to learn as I get older quality running shoes seem to be in my future.

I have nike right now but my buddy who does marathons for fun says Nike is easily one of the worst shoes and has seen the most injuries in them.

I'm leaning more towards over training imo because I work out my legs plenty but will be doing some deep diving into what can prevent this for future issues, I had a hamstring pull in june of 2020 and my god... When I finally came back from that I made it a point to really focus on glutes and hamstring lifts to hopefully keep that away and of course quads, my calfs I feel like I could bring more into the forefront of my leg days

honestly good to know, I've never had this issue before but I would also think maybe my shoes just aren't the right shoe for me and will be trying out some quality stuff this weekend to see how they feel. I'll do the hip stretches tomorrow slowly at first, today I've been icing and rest

I've heard PT can be either a god send or absolutely suck, but I will be doing a deep dive into what causes this and how to prevent it. Nice to know I'm not alone in this and I'm guessing mine is due to imbalances possibly and also overworked myself a bit I think

yeah seems to be a something a lot of others here have dealt with imbalances

I can't say I've tried them but my buddy who does marathons for fun says Brooks is one of the best around in his opinion

Ah okay good to know, I do workout my legs twice a week but I'll be focused on the smaller stuff, I do plenty of squats and hamstring workouts, I pulled my hamstring June of 2020 and I don't want that coming back so I've made it a point to not ignore them because my god a hamstring pull is so hindering to your everyday life.
