From what I gather they aren't grown much in the US due to your warm climate, UK has a great climate for them. Used to have them all the time here, there was a delicious Gooseberry yogurt that M&S used to sell when I was young-but they seem to have vanished from the shops, other than the tinned variety in recent times.

Definitely not something you buy at the store. The best piece of fruit is a fully plant-ripened fruit which is impossible to buy at a store. If you haven't seen my other thread, I have a full exotic tropical fruit garden in my backyard. Here are the actual best fruits:

1) Mango. But not the fibrous tasteless chit you buy at the store. Some of the exotic varieties that are grown here in Florida with zero fiber and the most intense flavor you'll ever experience, and of course fully tree ripened.

2) Jaboticaba. Also called the Brazilian tree grape, it looks like a grape but when you pop it in your mouth and bite, it explodes in a juicy intense tropical flavor that's hard to describe.

3) Sapodilla. Tastes like a mixture of brown sugar soaked pear and spiced apple pie.

4) Soursop. A bit of a strange consistency, kind of slimy and mushy but with an intense sweet and tart tropical flavor, kind of a mix of mango and pineapple.

5) Mamey sapote. Looks like a football, but has the raw consistency of cooked pumpkin/sweet potato and tastes like pumpkin pie with cinnamon and a nice background almond flavor.

I have all of those above trees in my backyard.

And here's one of my pineapples that has been fully plant ripened with the most intense flavor you'll ever have in a pineapple. You'll never find one like this in a store, you need to grow it yourself or know someone who does.
