The Gym Community

What is this shyte where the "community" at the gym matters to people? I have not stepped foot in a gym for just over two years and this whole "gym community" thing has been going on for longer, but I have been going on to some gyms' websites and they all harp on about the wank "community" at their gym. Do you knobs yourselves care about the community at your gyms? Why does it fuking matter? Do you really need fellow knobs and some "coach" to motivate you and guide you through workouts?

The community at a gym is kind of a big deal though.

What if your gym didn't have any HBBs? How would you make misc threads asking about whether HBBs want the D when you make eye contact?

I've rarely said more than, "Are you using that?" while at the gym in the last 19 years.

I grew up in a fairly small area and out gyms were very friendly. Everyone said hello and if you made friends with someone the chances are they were a lot like you, so it was great.

When I was younger, older guy had all kinds of tips and that was helpful.

Typically, gym guys are very funny too so there was a lot of humor.

When I moved to the Philly area, all of the gyms were filled with autistic yuppies who are afraid of each other. So, the gym culture in Philly did not exist and that was kind of sad.

Also, in my current gym, we used to have a huge number of super sexy Latin girls who were mostly naked working out. That made me feel like I was in a "hostile environment" like they say in sexual harassment videos at work. I want to workout and maybe say hi to some regulars, I don't want to be in some kind of porn photoshoot.

After covid all of the Latin girls are gone and I find the gym to be much more relaxed.

I got to know some guys but since it's not a small town gym people come and go, so it's not like back home.

Even if people aren't talking, I'm still surrounded by people, and I like to feel comfortable.

It’s a marketing strategy to attract female members.
Thus, a good man, though a slave, is free; but a wicked man, though a king, is a slave. For he serves, not one man alone, but what is worse, as many masters as he has vices. - Saint Augustine

When I think of a "gym community" i think of cringe gym social media posts and memes. Because mainline gym culture has no community.

Usually the "community" you feel is with your close boyos as you lift and chase aesthetics together. I used to workout with a big group of like 5 guys because it's just chit 18-21 year olds do. We'd riff about nutrition, exercises, and bodybuilding comps. Your average gym by nature isn't a social atmosphere.

When I started to train seriously (back in late 90s at Uni), yes you go there with a buddy, train together, get tips from each other, etc. In this day and age though, where you can get all the info you need online I just don't get the need to be in a group of people with a coach "motivating" you, and then at the end you all fistbump each other or whatever. Stupid as hell.

Gym community? Is that crossfit?

Usually I see people keeping to themselves or maybe 2-3 guys training together. That is about it.

2015 was the last year where I had a good workout. It went down hill since.

No, but they are probably the main proponents of it and it's probably how it started. See it in powerlifting gyms as well.

I agree.
The gym culture changed when IG became popular before that you barely saw anyone in there and like 80% of the lifters were pretty strong

I remember around 2009-2012 the gym would have maybe a few athletes lifting and 8 big dudes but it was empty most of the day

Cleanliness and etiquette are about all I care about.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.
