Just have your own accounts as you always did and create a joint investment account you both deposit into.

The big brain move is to simply not get married, and then there is no need to worry about it.

Dave Ramsey's method is to keep both spouses on the same page at all times. Going as far as to being on the same budget, and even using apps which sync across all of your accounts to show where the money's going or coming from. I think this is the safest route to go tbh.

I've never married but I'd be a fan of the above tbh srs.

Make sure you and the wife are aligned on financial goals.

We have separate accounts due to her being wealthy through family money. We even file separate tax returns as she file quarterly.

However, I am the breadwinner and I pay for most things

We have a lots of accounts and manage a few businesses. We have a joint account for household items and generally contribute to it depending on our goals and how well the businesses are going. It gets pretty complicated, not going to lie. We have a half hour meeting once a week ( we do skip it sometimes ) where we review items and what we plan on doing and who contributes what. Spreadsheet is on google docs so both of us make entries and can review it, etc.

Great question op. Us HVM's have to think about this stuff.

My wife and I have separate bank accounts and we agree to pay separete bills/expenses. That said, we're also on all of each other's accounts. But we don't touch each other's money without talking about it first.

I pay for:
Mortgate
Tesla payment
Home improvement/repairs
Restaurants
Large emergency expenses
Investing

She pays for:
Groceries
Phone bill
All utilities
Insurance
Gas
Medical bills (if she needs help with this, I step in)
Clothes for both of us

We've built everything we have together and we get along great. Our combined net worth when we got married was like $3k. This plan has worked out well for us.
Always Neg Back Crew.

Joint bank account if she's too dumb and too fat to cheat.

Otherwise, separate. Just decide on who pays which bill.

What if you get arrested for your misc posts by the Ministry of Information and your accounts are all joint so now she's broke and needy so your boy steps in to "help" out....

50% of my/her checks goes into one joint account. All house related expenses, groceries, vacations etc comes from there.

We each keep 50% to do as we wish.

It’s awesome, there are no discussions about money, ever.

We got a joint account together just to make it easier to send it to a joint brokerage account monthly. We contribute maybe 1/3-1/2 of each disposable income to that. Outside of that, we don't have any joint accounts, and never saw any reason too. Plus it'd be too complicated just to say we did it. I pay the utilities and internet, and the rest of the bills on CC for the points, and she transferss me half. Outside of that, before we met we already had investment accounts and savings accounts and whatnot separately doing just fine, so we saw no reason to combine much really. We're also both very financially responsible, so that certainly helps. I'm sure it's much different if one or both partners are terrible with money.

Yeah how your spending aligns is a big factor here, my woman is probably even a bit more frugal than me these days but I typically make 3-4x what she does

Agreed. Its a proven fact that before women leave their husband/file for a divorce they start squirreling away money for just them. Sometimes for upwards of a year.

I feel like every married man needs at least 10-15K cash on standby and maybe another 10-15k in crypto as a minimum. As you build wealth you should also be building your emergency fund.

If you lose absolutely everything. Whether its your house burning down. Your woman leaving you and taking everything you have. Etc. You should at least have about 50-100K in cash/crypto on standby/accessible to you to rebuild.

I'm a fan of 'most' of Dave Ramsey's stuff but this is kind of a boomerish/religious approach. Modern marriages are a far cry from their historical and religious origins. In separations/divorces/issues with child custody men are basically treated like second class citizens in every modern nation.

A 2015 study indicates that 69% of divorces are initiated by women. 90% of them are by college educated women. More recently those numbers have been updated to 80% of divorces are initiated by women. And about 50% of marriages end in divorce.

If you want to take it to a religious place. Men are supposed to be the head of the house-hold and run it. And make all of the decisions. Women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands and function as a help-mate. The Bible literally commands it. I'm sure the Muslims have even stricter commandments.

How many actual modern marriages function this way? How many woman truly believe this is her place in the home/marriage?

If a woman does not agree with this/believe it fully why the hell would you sign legally binding documents and swear an oath to her? Much less combine finances/give her control of the household?

We are 100% commingled. I do have a business account - but that is only for legit business stuff. Honestly split accounts in a relationship = Whats yours is hers and whats hers is hers - DONT FORGET THIS!

Paychecks hit the same account & gets allocated to other accounts. Debit / credit cards are shared. Bills get auto drafted. When we go out to dinner or vacation, it doesnt matter who pays - the money comes out of the pot.

Growing up my parents had their own accounts and I always thought it was so fukkin weird & stupid. Even though they both made more than enough money, they would have to sort out who paid what. Like 5x in my whole life my dad left his wallet at home and my mom would make a big scene & bitch non-stop about paying for dinner or whatever we were doing. I cringed even as a weeeee lad.

My SIL & BIL have separate everything. I dont even understand it. They fight about money ALL THE TIME. I remember he wanted to get a handgun and he bought it in secret with his own money - when she found out about it they fought about it because she thought it was a waste of his money. I knew about the gun before he bought it and his wife found out 2 years later - Just weird to have that much secrecy in a relationship.
