Golf bros, is it worth taking lessons?

I am thinking of taking up Golf and was wondering if you fellow miscers recommend taking lessons as a beginner.

Yep. And you really need to hit over a 1000 balls before you start to feel comfortable. Def take a lesson to get your muscle memory in the right direction. You will make bad habits learning on your own.

Lessons are legit a terrible idea. The point of golf is to day drink outdoors and bullchit with your buddies.
Holding some exact stance and swinging at whatever pitch and angle and focusing on your follow through is tryhard and gay.
You just smack the chit out of the ball and then chase it in the golf cart, you don't need training.

Yes i took one from a good teacher at a private club in Hilton Head SC and although i was good, i realized that this game was not for me right now.

Absolutely best thing to do. What happens is people go to the range and hit hundreds and hundreds of golf balls... the wrong way. This becomes muscle memory and then is 1000 times harder to unlearn. Just take lessons from the start and golf will be so much more enjoyable.

Every decent player I know was taught as a kid by people who knew what they were doing. I see adults who never break 100 and get frustrated to the point they throw clubs or just quit altogether. Get lessons if you plan on playing more than once or twice a year.

Yes, 1000%. If you're just starting out, get a decent set of used clubs and spend the rest of your money on lessons (unless money isnt an issue). I would avoid an instructor that tries to get you to take a lesson per week as you need to have time to ingrain your swing and learn. Once you have a good swing dialed after a few months or more in, then you can go get fitted for more precise clubs that will fit your swing better. I wouldnt get fitted right away with a shiitty swing, you'll just be spinning your wheels and need to get fitted again once you get better.

Do you want to spin you wheels and learn the game with an incorrect swing and have to correct those bad habits later or learn correctly from the start?

yes. pretty sure my labral tear was due to getting into the game, having no idea wtf i was doing and trying to happy gilmore most of my shots at the driving range. And after I had to get the surgery, I've never been the same since. It's a game of brains/technique/skill. that's why the best guys are smart af and most are college educated. alot of them are twinks too and they can still drive the ball far af because of having proper technique. no need to reinvent the wheel and try to deduce the swing all by yourself.

Yes if you're serious about getting better you need lessons

Trainer/coach is there to be supercritical of your form and address the problems.

Definitely worth it if you want to get good. I’m a competitive person so I’m not happy going out and shooting 100+ with the boys on occasion. Goals to be a scratch golfer. Shoot in the mid-high 80s now.

I picked up golf last June and have been taking lessons ever since. Paid for a year bundle at the local country club and get 3 lessons a month for a year.


Hard game is hard.

100000% yes. Most are not terribly expensive either. Many people will do deals where it's like $50 a lesson for 4-5 and you get another for free. Absolute best thing you can do hands down. But you need to go do a lesson, practice, play, practice, then get a lesson again. You cant really do 5 lessons in a row and roll.

I get addicted to things easily and become obsessed…I joined a local country club and basically hit balls 4-5 times a week on the range and try and play once or twice a week. Also playing with better players has helped me a lot.

I’ve sunk a lot of money into it lol it’s solid progress for sure though. But there are still days where I wonder if I ever hit a ball in my life lol but that’s golf.

Worth it for sure, especially if you don't know the essentials like how to grip the club, how to aim at a target properly, how start your swing (takeaway), etc.

Yup. Thats golf. Playing with better players is 10/10 as well.

Im ultra competitive with myself so i totally feel you. And probably partly why i play a little less than i should because it's hard af. But....i live on a golf course and it's $15 to use their practice facility (chipping green, putting green, and range balls, all unlimited). Need to use it more.

The tl;dr of golfing



The difference between bombing a drive and slicing it in the trees is a club pointed about 4 degrees right. And you have to keep the club face that straight while it flies at 100 MPH.

Golf the most technique centered sport out there, and #2 ain't close. If you don't get lessons, you will suck. It just depends if you're cool with sucking or not.

I personally am. I shoot about 100 and don't have enough distance to score... thanks palsy in my legs. And debugging my own golf swing is the most fun part about the game to me, it's like a never ending science experiment. So I'm cool with just getting drunk, hitting some trees, and trying to fix it the next day.

But if you're competitive about golf, that won't really fly. You will will waste a lot of time and a lot of range balls building bad habits and figuring out things an instructor could have taught you in 1/10th the time.

If you've got buddies who are decent I'd just play a few rounds with them, get some pointers off them and see if you enjoy it before shelling out $$ for lessons as they're generally not cheap.

My best advice is you don't have to swing as hard as you think you do.

two questions please:

sounds like a great idea. I actually have a bunch of great clubs that others have given me after buying new ones....big berthas, callaways, pings. Thing is all I've ever done is go to the driving range and fuk around.

only been on a course a few times playing cuz I don't want to embarass myself. I try to watch PGA every weekend though.

1) do the lessons take place over 9 holes or more?

2) why are pros always tweaking their swings? it seems like if you get to being a pro ...your good to go. is it based on age/injury?

btw: pga pros are legit baller in real life...they look like they drip money like water.

1 handicap. The answer is yes.. and no.

some genuinely great players have figured it out largely by themselves. the trouble with golf is that a lot of elements of the swing are completely counterintuitive.

whether you take lessons in person, watch youtube tips, read swing theory on forums, or just dig it out of the dirt.. its about understanding WHY you are trying to swing a certain way. So whatever works for you and how you like to learn

Most of the time you'll work on the range with a pro really ironing out your swing. My lessons last an hour. You don't need to get lessons on the course until you have proper mechanics imo. I've been taking them for awhile so now every four lessons or so I'll go on the course and play a few holes. That'll generally be a two hour lesson and that's around 9 holes.

I like playing a lot by myself so I'll go play during the week 9 holes here and there alone. Some public courses won't let you play alone, but mine will. So that's a good place to really take what you work on at the driving range and chipping and putting greens to the test.


One piece of advice is don't neglect practicing your putting and chipping. Those areas don't seem like the most fun but they're the biggest ways to cut down on your score.

i love chipping and putting. in fact one of my friends who golfs told me he took my golf-tip in vacation with him to Hawaii. Basically I said when putting try to envision the hole as a basketball hoop size hole on the ground because if you go for broke on a small hole you (at least me) psych yourself out. I dunno if true but it said it helped him.

basically going down the fairway is humiliating. balls left right if not lost. not worth it but wish I could tee off like the PGA pros...sounds like a shotgun blast or something when standing next to them...wild.

Definitely take lessons to get the correct mechanics taught and practice practice practice. As much as people cheer for the long bomb drives, you'll shave more points off your game with a solid short game. Drive for show and putt for dough.

Totally forgot this and something that ill 2nd as a noob. You can be overwhelmed with swing videos, tips, etc. But you have to understand that not all of them are for you because you may not be doing that *exact* thing. You may be slicing TF out of a ball, but it could be for 1 of 13 different reasons. So unless you specifically know youre doing *that thing* the video or tip talks to, it may do jack shyt.

Ive taken lessons a number of times and theyve helped immensely, and they have been relatively inexpensive. $50-75 an hour. Just never stuck with it. Need to do like Unstumpable says and just find a local course with a decent rep that does a program so you consistently go.
