there's only a handful of scenes with CGI, the rest is done with animatronics



fun fact: when the glass roof of the car cracks with the children under it, this wasn't supposed to happen but the animatonic acted up because of the water from the rain

Watch the JP episode of THE MOVIE THAT MADE US in Netflix. Very good. Their original plan was that clay motion or whatever it is called + animatronix. But a worker showed very basic CGI that blown them away, basically have to redo a lot of it.

In the end, bad CGI sucks but a good movie with bad CGI is better to me than a bad movie with great CGI.

The reason why those shots look so good is:

1) Everything else in the shot is real, and the dinosaurs are expertly blended into the environment. These days, they often do entire shots using CGI, and everything just looks overly saturated, overly "perfect" and video game like.

2) The camera isn't doing anything crazy (again because they are real scenes just with dinosaurs added in). If you watch Jurassic world, there are scenes where the entire shot is CGI and the (virtual) camera is moving in a way no camera could, like following right behind a pack of sprinting raptors. Your brain instantly knows all that **** is fake.

3) They put a lot more effort into giving the dinosaurs genuine weight and momentum when they moved. Just watch the T-Rex paddock escape and how meticulously they crafted the shot of it crossing the street. You can feel every shift of weight, it seems every bit like it could be a real animal. The new ones they hardly bother because they weren't labours of love in the same way JP1 was.

There are more reasons, but here are a few examples of why JP1 still looks so much better than some of the newer stuff even though from a technical perspective the CGI is far more primitive and less detailed.
I'll say this too as an A/V enthusiast, sound design has gotten really lazy as well. A lot of modern movies just don't have that "punch" that older movies do. When you throw on JP and they are hiding from the T-Rex in the Jeep you can feel that chit in your soul. Your unborn children feel that impact. These days you only get that in super high dollar, mega-budget movies that ARE NOT created by Disney. Disney has the fukkin worst sound engineers in existence. I can pretty much tell how horrible the soundtrack is by how much CGI is in the movie. However, Ready Player One is a notable stand out and I truly appreciate the sound design in that movie.


Cliffs: Sound design is just as important as practical effects.
