It's actually not that hard. There are a lot of guys earning $250k thinking they made it, but in reality after a house, nice car, and expensive wife there's nothing else left.
That doesn't mean you should have no money left over.

Even if you bought a three flat at one million dollars you could be living almost mortage free with the two other slaves, I mean renters covering your mortage. This is just poor money management. I don't care if you live in San Francisco.

Well we don’t know how consistently these people are making this money either, plenty oscillate between making lots of money and making less. The group of people making $250k+ surely changes a decent amount year to year.

It would take some effort to make $250k consistently long term and not end up with big net worth just from building equity in more and more stuff over time. Be reasonable, pay as little interest as possible, and it’s pretty tough to go wrong at that level

Prices are up some but lets not go crazy. They obviously cant manage their money.

Pro tip- when stuff is more expensive, but less of it. If you need it, buy it on sale and use it frugally. Pretty simple but maybe some need a refresher.

I like soup. Just a thing for me, always loved soup and a sandwich for lunch.

A can that used to be $1.99 is now $2.39.

Dollar General? Chit is $.99 a can.

Rationally, I can see this.

$250k household income with a family:
- Any major city this is hard if not impossible if you want any type of house in a safe area with good schools.
NYC
LA
Boston
San Francisco
San Jose
Chicago
Austin
Miami
San Diego
Portland
Seattle

I've lived in a few of these cities. Owning a home, raising a family in a safe neighborhood, and sending them to good schools...........

LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE in most of these cities in most circumstances.

I really believe a lot folks don't understand the reality or the plight of what's happening.

Chicago used to the "affordable New york".

Now, EVERY MOTHER FCKING BUILDING WORTH A MOTHER FCKING DAMN

Is some new fancy skyrise. The city mandated that 30% of units needs to go to low income housing.

I lived in those units. Many of the low income folks got free rent.... usually old people. But their degen kids lived there and dealer drugs all day.

So because hard working folks needs to subsidize these buildings, we now pay $4k for a 2 bed 2 bath condo. No lie. The city expects these brain dead liberals to pick up the slack.

Except their not.

No one wants to pay that. Hence why Chicago and Illinois leads the nation in move aways.

I feel like I do this (make more). Just cost of living goes up. It's not that you aren't saving at all. I max out profit sharing and IRA etc etc. But from what I take home after ALL expenses and retirement and estimated taxes and savings and insurance and kids etc etc - I definitely live paycheck to paycheck. I have a huge emergency fund/savings etc - but I still run down my "salary" month to month and replenish with the next month.

I'm somewhat close to $250k... all I will say is it goes fast. I think I feel significantly less well off than I actually am is due to stashing money in 401k, HSA, and paying off everything way faster than probably necessary. Home will be paid in like 10 years at current rate. Last vehicle paid off in 2 years max. Lots of expenses come up no one tells you about lmao. Fuk paying $10k for a goddam fence and $2,500 for trees to be trimmed and have one removed.

The other thing no one tells you is that on a personal level no one is really willing to ever let their lifestyle creep in a downward direction. For example, I graduated school and started accumulating a lot of fun toys. I bought a new truck, a nice new full suspension bike, a boat, and a bunch of new clothes both for work and leisure/gym. Now, 4-5 years later, I haven't upgraded/changed any of those things and honestly I feel like I am rolling back into peasant status. Same with lifestyle- I used to book flights to Vegas for the weekend on a whim 2-3 times a year and do a bunch of other shyt on my weekends like a quick trip to Aspen/Winter Park/Jackson hole/Moab/Sedona. Now I hardly do any of that and it does genuinely feel bad mayne... but I got over it because it feels good getting closer to being financially independent and knowing I could leave my career behind and find more of a passion project to work towards once my home is paid. I think most people really struggle to find peace with letting the outside world think they are moving backwards or "less well" in terms of money or happiness.

I can kind of relate to this post. I used to do a lot of nice things for myself, but now have three kids. I struggle with spending on myself now, mostly due to lacking time. Also I didn’t have a lot of money until my mid 30s, so I have learned how to live rather frugally and making any huge purchases gives me a lot of anxiety. Upside is that my savings/retirement is nearly 7 figures.

250k is a decent amount of money, but not a ton of money if you’re living in a large metro area in a nice neighborhood with a family. Most folks are consumers and keep up with the appearances. I can believe the statistic.

That's just irresponsible lifestyle choices.

If you can't put money aside making $20K a month you are just spending too much plain and simple.

You're just bad with money. Plain and simple. Making $250K a year doesn't mean anything if you waste it all on dumb chit.

Let’s be real, 250k today has the same purchasing power as 175k did one year ago if you go by real world inflation numbers and not the BS gov numbers

If you make 250k your only taking home 166k (lose 40 percent to taxes)

If you make 250k you probably live in a very high cost of living area, and may have kids and are paying a mortgage on an overpriced home

So not surprising at all many are paycheck to paycheck. I get it though, it seems shocking because you are single and live in a cheap area

Lol at the responses here that are like “what a bunch of dumbasses, if they just ate beans and rice, drove a 20 year old Camry, don’t have kids, and live in a small apartment they would have money left over”

That’s kinda the point. Someone making 250k shouldn’t need to make those lifestyle cutbacks. But 250k isn’t that much money now

Lol at people who think the gravy train is never going to end.

I knew so many guys like you who lost their house and had to sell their Audi because they squandered their money pre-2008.

Guys who could have survived fine and even profited off the crash but had no capital when it mattered because they were too busy keeping up with the Joneses.

Nah, you aren’t taking home 20k per month. More like 12k after taxes. You live in a high cost of living area, so your mortgage and other housing costs 6k of that 12k goes towards housing. You’ve now got 6k leftover for food, clothes, kids, utilities, transportation, etc. it’s not that much

Just so I understand you, you think someone making 250k doesn’t earn enough to afford an Audi?

If so, you are actually on my page. That 250k isn’t actually all that much

250k is not a lot anymore. People need to realize things cost nearly twice the same as before. Gas is more, loans/interest are up, taxes have sky rocketed, energy costs more, rentals, the list goes on. Even to repair my wooden fence from last 3 years of weather costs 3x4 times as much.

Hell even Uber eats costs more on every single item + a 50 cent gas fee

It’s all accumulation.

Unfortunately this trickles down to lower class people as well as they miss more opportunities to make money and now even more limited/costs up to what they can afford

We have the elite democrats running Washington/the US to name responsible for this. Shutting businesses down followed by handing trillions out to this very day has consequences on every day Americans

BRB someone making 250k should live like a normal person if they want to save

Those are contradictory statements, if someone was rich they wouldn’t need to live an average lifestyle to be able to save

Exactly.

I’m working 3 jobs two full times jobs, my girl two jobs and about to be a dr. We both had to pick up 2nd jobs to continue our lifestyle in the last YTD alone yet we are actually spending more this year but still bringing in items to the table less

Keep in mind we are paying more taxes too

Now you see biden buying off student loans.

There ultimate goal is to make everyone equal while there is a top 15-20%

Middle class is wiped out and everyone remains lower class/slaves to pay off the elites spending while they still rake in more than ever.

We’ll see how things go in next 2-3 years I may be leaving the US to escape this never ending madness, humans are not meant to live like this, it’s literally enslavement

I bet in our lifetime if it continues we will see people living out in the country/grid wiped off completely in the US,

All these big empty buildings that were once stores will turn too apartments/pods like China while being regulated what we can buy online till everyone all receives the same thing eventually

Such a joke. I’m just under 6 figures, wife gets paid much less to have jobs she enjoys. We are in the process of buying a new house that’s $400k, not contingent on my current homes sale because that’s enough income to support both mortgages, 25% down payment, a daily driver for each of us, and fun weekend car and one daily driver and the toy all paid for, the other daily driver was bought 2 months ago. I have a new daily driver on order that I’ll put half of the money down on. I’ll have about $25k left after I buy the new house before I sell my current house. I’ll make about $88k from the equity after selling my current house paying taxes, realtor, etc. I’m not living some crazy lifestyle, but it’s been easy to save the money and we still have fun. Our idea of a vacation is going to a national park or taking a road trip to check out some new restaurants and food though. Can’t imagine making 250k and worrying about money

I wonder how long people will still be saying that making 100k is “good money”, after how many years of this inflation

I imagine 2024 being like this:
BRB a base starter home in a medium cost of living metro costs 1.5M
BRB a new Toyota Corolla costs 70k, used vehicle depreciate linearly
BRB natural gas costs 5 dollars per therm
BRB daycare for kids cost 5k per month

And people will still be like “yeah 100k is still good money”
