I used to have maps to many different states and now I don't.

So, the internet goes out and now I don't know where I'm at.

In any type of civilizational crisis, a meteor hits, rich people decide to kill us, most people would be last and whoever could make it up as they go would live the longest.

I'm no survival expert, but when you boil water isn't it the steam that's pure, and what's left in the pan is dirty?

So you'd need to catch the steam, allow it to condense and run off into a separate pan. Presumably there would be no power, so you'd have to do this over an open fire, perhaps outdoors where there are zombies wandering around, or other people that have ill intentions towards you and your freshly captured water.

It requires electricity, so as soon as the power goes off, so does the Internet. Assuming the power is on, I doubt anyone in the data centres are going to be working once all hell breaks loose, so it's only a matter of time before stuff starts going wrong and there's nobody around to fix it.

You would have to and be crafty about it too.

I have no clue about it, but I wonder how long public water would work and under what conditions it wouldn't.

We had a sewer blockage in my apartment and bam...no water.

I found it chilling.

Yeah.

That's how the Earth works, water gets recycled infinitely.

That's how they distill alcohol too, you have rotting vegetable matter, you heat it a certain way, then the alcohol evaporates and you catch it, cool it, and you have pure alcohol.

I would assume with water that any living thing in it could just be boiled to death. But, if you had chemically polluted water you could probably drink the condensed steam. I'm not 100% sure though.

It's no good though when an armed group turn up and steal all your farmed foods, or worse, kill you. So then not only do you have to stock up on stuff and get into farming, but you somehow have to find a way to defend it too.

That's distilling, not pasteurizing. Boiling the water long enough will heat up everything, including the debris, killing all bacteria making it safe to drink. Distilling is slow and inefficient, so it would only be useful for the extra precaution of removing chemicals or minerals, for example if you lived by the ocean and wanted to convert the salt water into something drinkable.

About an hour before sheer traffic brings it down.

The nearest source of water to my house is 10 miles through suburbs, which is a lot of distance for things to go wrong. If I drag 4 5-gallon jugs on a wagon (160 lbs), that will last me about 20 days, and an average family 5 days. If I don't have a wagon and just hike, I can probably only carry half that amount, minus one gallon from sweating on the hike, resulting in 9 days for one person, 2-3 days for a family. Not very efficient

Yes, that's what I was trying to say.

I live by a creek in Philly, which is amazing.

If I wanted to get to the river it would be about four miles.

Four miles can be quite a walk without carrying extremely heavy water. In addition, the amount of sweat from it all would make you more dehydrated. SO you would have to try to relocate near a water source.

Of course, other people would have the same idea, which would attract zombies.

If we were in a "rich people are killing us" situation, then sending soldiers to where the water is at, then finishing us off, would be an easy plan.

Thus, stealing bottled water/soda from others would be a great idea and hiding near water another.

Doesn't it depend on the source of the water and what's in it though?

For example, if you boiled a pan of water with a turd in it, at the end of it the turd will still be there and the water will still be contaminated. Okay, that's an extreme example. Are you saying if the water looks fairly clean in the first place, then boiling it would kill off any potential contamination that you can't see?

Farming:

A terrible idea.

Do you HONESTLY know how to farm?

Farm what? where do the seeds come from?

Do you know how to stop plant diseases, insects, and animals from eating what you plant?

That would not work out unless you had the knowledge and all supplies to farm.

I think you could boil a turd to death, lol.

A turd is digested food, so you would be drinking sterilized digested food water.

However, I'm not sure if there's digestive chemicals in a turd that would make you sick. Likely it would take a superhuman effort to tolerate the flavor of it since we evolved to be grossed out by the smell of feces.

I assume if you distilled the water any flavor would be gone.

agree, farming is down when the initial wave dies down and the numbers are lower...but that can be a long time.

It'll be gross but the turd will still be safe to drink as long as you heated the interior of the turd to a safe level (boiled the water long enough)

Edit: apparently residual toxins don’t care

A ship like that is a great idea. I assume there would be supplies for the crew, who I would hope would be dead or mostly dead, lol.

If most humans died and then the zombies rotted away that would be a survival challenge.

You could likely live most of your life by traveling around finding packaged products, but that would get gross after a while. So, you would have to try farming and I assume that you could try all sorts of foods to grow.

But, you would have to obtain books on it and study your brains out.

Probably getting a gun and figuring out how to shoot deer and squirrels would be very beneficial also.

It would be a very hard life.

Best shot would be if you had something wireless like Starlink and had a power source for your device.

The issue is that the data centres will probably become overwhelmed with traffic (and not have any employees to tend to it), and eventually lose power and connectivity. So even if you had power and connectivity yourself, after a while nothing else would be online.

On the plus side, many data centres are pretty secure, and have backup diesel generators. But I am not sure the generators are meant to provide long term power, and I doubt any employees are going to stick around when their families are at home being eaten by zombies.

They will welcome me as a God. I'll take their women as concubines.
