I wish there was more outreach by FAA on these jobs-would have definitely considered when I was younger. My buddy in college ended up going this route after a finishing his BS in chemical engineering. He was too far into his degree before realizing he just wasn’t interested in the field but he decided to finish it since he was so close to graduating.

Seems to be the only Fed job most people talk about is the postal service😂

They are pretty terrible at advertising this field. I swear the majority of people who joined either had family members who were doing it, or were prior pilots.

A huge wave of people that joined along with me actually found out about it because of a top post on Reddit. I remember when I went to the academy and they asked us how we found about this job and 90% of the people said from the same reddit post

I really don't know why anyone would pick this boring ass career when you could just work a little harder or a little longer and become a pilot. Better benefits. Higher pay. More career mobility. Over-all a much sexier job. Etc. I know a couple of commercial pilots. Seems like one of the GOAT career fields TBH.


Honestly I have no idea why we are conning young people into boring career fields and boring courses of study in college when there are much more amazing options available. But when you are like 18-20 nobody is telling to you be a commercial pilot. Become a ship/boat captain. Etc. I've literally met guys who have the absolute time of their life every time they are at work. Literally doing what they love. Single brahs traveling the globe partying/smashing chicks around the world. And they are pulling in 300-500k per year. Meanwhile we've got our school systems encouraging us to do jobs we hate/that bore us to death just to pay bills...




I get it. This career is extremely stable and pays well with good benefits. But the work itself is boring and tedious as hell. Props to you OP because there is no way I'd want to do that job.

I assume you have to be highly focused, never bored, never distracted, and on point during your whole shift.

In addition, wouldn't you have to know how to fly or at least know everything you could about the topic?

I'm not sure about that but it seems like it would be a very abstract job of just paying attention if you don't.

The age limit would not work for anyone 30+.

No you don't have to know or learn how to fly. For the most part, you don't even need to know what planes even look like. You do have to get a generally understand of their climb rate and whether they are a piston or turboprop or jet tho.

You def can be bored. It happens a good amount, when there is like 2-3 planes on your scope and you're not talking to any of them. It happens a decent amount at night when certain approach controls end up being closed. Not every facility is 24/7.

Normally in that instance you're just talking and joking with your coworkers about random stuff. Generally this is where people start to gossip and then it starts to turn into high school type chit, which is the most annoying part of the job

The mental decline at 56 is pretty sharp when it comes to doing the job fast and correctly, according to studies at leastThis is true to an extent. Lots of younger people call out when they see its a Fri-Sat and there aren't many people in the building.

I can't imagine having to live with less than that.
