You go outside that bubble and theres questionable activities going on, and every now and then those activities may come within the bubble.

This is pretty spot on. I've been in UTC (about a couple blocks from UCSD) since December of 2018 and its pretty sweet here.

-Haven't had any problem with crime, Thats not to say there's none, its just that for the population density its surprisingly few and far between. On a number of occasions i've accidentally left my door unlocked all day/car unlocked all night and i've never had anything stolen from me (yet) Its also true that crime depends on where you live. If you're in Chula Vista or Santee or Spring Valley, you're probably going to have more run-ins with theft and whatnot, but if you're where i'm at or Mira Mesa or Poway or Sorrento Valley then more often than not its not something i'd be terribly paranoid about.

-Traffic can be a tad annoying at times, but one thing that sets San Diego traffic apart from a place like LA is that the traffic here actually moves. In LA you'll be at a dead standstill for 10-15 minutes at a time.

-Its not just the cost of living thats a pain in the ass its simply FINDING somewhere to live thats a headache. When I found my place I lucked out. This complex had notoriously bad landlords, but they had since been under management and remodeled all the apartments and they were desperate for more tenants so I took the offer and its been perfectly fine. Every once and a while I search for other complexes to move to just to be one step ahead of the game in case SHtF for whatever reason, and there's absolutely nothing available. I was fooling around looking at $5k/month penthouses and even those are fully occupied.

Aside from housing costs (which is an issue EVERYWHERE) and the cost of living its hard to find anything bad about San Diego. Its a big city but has a small town vibe to it (or a cluster of small towns). People may not be keen on making friends but they're also very open to going out and doing chit because there's always a lot to do, even if its just for a weekend or two.

and finally, I know you're looking for bad things about San Diego, but one think I REALLY admire about this place is the potential for job growth. There are so many popular and well paying sectors here that the world is your oyster especially if you have a college degree. I came from a small town where you either worked in retail (grocery store/gas station) or you were in health care and thats it, but HERE? There's an endless list of jobs full time contract temp/temp to hire in almost every field imaginable.

Heard the area is generally pretty conservative by Cali standards, perfect weather, beaches, amazing fresh food, cheap and quick flights to Mexico, etc. All the benefits of LA with nearly none of the negatives except COL.

If I was single it would be in my top 3 places I'd move for sure. Maybe #1 tbh.

the cost of living, thats it. its an amazing city.. think of LA but with no smog, cleaner air, less traffic and nicer people.

It is. I moved back in 2021 to buy a business from a relative. I’m in North County area. Way more Trump, FJB, LGB here than I ever saw in NC/upstate SC. Maybe just because the locals have been dealing with the lefty BS longer than people where I’m from.



COL, homelessness and petty crime are the main two negatives. Homeless issue is worse here than where I’m from, but that seems to be increasing everywhere.

The petty crime is a little ridiculous. Everyone has a story about their chit getting broken into, something getting taken off their property, etc.

When I visited a couple years ago, everyone walking around had tattoos. Looked degenerate as fuk. You'd be limited to dating inkie women if you moved there.

Not that anyone here would, but don’t be at the wrong place at the wrong time or commit a crime. I’m pretty sure the DA here has like a 99% prosecution rate or some crazy stat.

I can’t think of too many downsides. The city isn’t that big for people who are used to really big metros like nyc, Boston, Chicago, SF, etc.

If you’re into sports, there’s not really a professional sports scene here which some people might miss.

The weather is amazing, but is almost too good. If you like some variety and like the seasons, than you might get bored of the weather here.

There isn’t a booming business scene here by any means. You can certainly find some decent jobs, but it’s honestly a great place to be remote in my opinion unless you’re in a specific industry that might have a bit of a presence here. Certainly not a place where you’re going to find high growth tech companies that are on an IPO trajectory.

Other than that, it’s a great city. I don’t live there at the moment, but I’m in NorCal and visit all the time. Considering making the move. Definitely one of my favorite cities in the US. If you’re a surfer, there’s really nowhere better.

I don't live there anymore, but COL (as already mentioned several times and doesn't even need to be mentioned imo) and traffic CAN be really bad at certain parts during certain times. Like if you're going east bound on the 52 in the after noon for one example. Yeah, it's not as bad as LA or some other cities but it still sucks ass if you have a commute where you regularly have to deal with it.

Rent is high but keep in mid where you are going to live.

I live in Chula Vista which is a suburban community in an old apartment. Its cheaper here than it is just a few miles away. There are pockets where you can get a bit cheaper rent but not many.

East county has some more affordable places as well. Dont think you will be living in some fancy high rise downtown with pretty neighbors without being willing to pay a seriously steep price for it if you get it at all.

People are pretty chill. They are from all over the place so you wont get some sort of community type feel if you like that. For instance if you go see the Cubs play the padres, 90% of the fans will be Cubs fans.

Lots of bars around but of course they big thing is fancy hipster beers that are like $9 for 8 oz so be prepared for that. hard to find just regular bud light spots.

Beaches are weather are superb. Summer is just going to get started. Soon as June is over the sun will break through and it will basically be summer until Thanksgiving or so.

We have hands down the best whole in the wall mexican food in the nation. no question about it. I wont eat it anywhere else.

Along those lines, if you have an issue with mexican people. this isnt the place for you. You will be outnumbered at every event you attend except maybe the opera or something like that. Get used to it and enjoy it. Great people.
