What has changed in your diet/training since you started lifting

Adding to the "Bring lifting back to the Misc"....

Training (in the beginning, 2005-2006)
- brosplit all day
- skipped legs
- flat bench for life
- arms 2-3x a week.
- horrid form on just about everything

Diet
- Gotta eat 6-7x a day
- chicken + brown rice
- gotta have Casein protein before bed
- $200 of supplements a month

Fast forward to 2022

Training
- Tried everything, but enjoy brosplit or Conjugate System the best.
- primary focus on technique and form
- Never flat bench
- Legs 2x a week
- less focus on weight, more focus on improvement moving the weight.

Diet
- Red meat > everything
- down to 3-4 meals day
- only supplements are health focused ( Vit C, D3, Omega-3s.....no more Anator P70 or Gakic, lulz)
- don't even use protein shakes nowadays

I envy the young lifters getting into the game nowdays with the amount of knowledge available online (despite the IG idiots). When us oldcels were starting we only had muscle magazines to go off.

Used to do the ridiculous 1g of protein to 1LB of bodyweight.

Been steadily making gains off 40-60g of protein, at 5'8", 185 with six pack.

Protein numbers are kind of bull**** and what's really important is making sure your test stays test.

Respect for snap city.

...more specifically, getting rid of ego. Snap city/injuries of the spine can be terrible and derail you immensely.

Making adjustments to how I lift as I get older. Trap bar, bench blockz, ssb bar and box squats...training back and shoulders is important. You can't just bench and ignore your opposing muscles without risks.

Diet: better nutrition overall. Understanding if you eat garbage and do a lot of cardio it's a huge waste of time.

I take vitamins super seriously now... i can push so hard but if i dont feed enough i will get sick. So def nutrition intake.

I was diagnosed w sleep apnea at 23 with a stop breath interval of 33 per hour. Living like that is living with oxygen hypoxia in your sleep and severely curbs development + leads to mental health issues

Got bunch of surgeries now its 7 or so. QoL much better.

I think a lot of people over do it with the pills. I think most people would be fine with D3, a Green Supplements, and Omega-3s. Any other additions should be person specific dependent on their deficiencies.

Right now I'm taking:

Multi
BCAA's
Carnitine Tartrate
Potassium Magnesium
Vitamin C
Alpha Test (supposed test enhancer, probably BS)

I also drink a collagen supplement.

Dang really gotta think back for this one...

Started out in High School as a Freshman during gym class and sometimes after school.

Routine was usually a random mix of the following:

-Flat bench
-Curls
-Tricep extensions
-Pec deck
-Lateral raises
-Abs
-Quad extensions
-Lat pull downs
-Seated Cable rows
-Chin ups
-Hamstring curls
-Swiss bar curl+press

Legit would just pick randomly from that list and fill the time available to me doing movements.

Dumb rep ranges (me and a buddy used to do this fukking dumb bench workout where we would start with the bar and rep til failure, then add 10lbs and do it again, add 10lbs and do it again, etc., until we were only doing like 5 reps lol.)

No focus on actual progressive overload

No tracking anything

I'm just proud looking back that I didanyleg movements, but obviously wasn't squatting or lunging or deadlifting or anything like that.

I was tiny, too. As a Freshman I was literally 5'7" 104lbs starting the year. Emaciated, basically. Lifting grew my appetite a lot, and combined with puberty starting I put ona lotof muscle that first year and ended Freshman year at a staggering 5'9" 131lbs. Actually did put ona lotof muscle in those 9 months. Also to be clear, the only reason I say it was a lot of muscle is because of the following factors:

-Started out emaciated (easy to add muscle when significantly undersized and untrained)
-Started Puberty (brb natty test levels of a horny teenager....literally)
-Started lifting and eating a lot in the context of the previous two points
-Ended leaner than I started (if you can believe it). My teammates gave me the nickname "8-pack" because of how fukking lean and visible my abs were.

Nowadays I've kind of gone the far opposite direction. My splits now tend to be Full Body, a Half and Half variation (UL, Anterior Posterior, CL+BS (currently doing), etc.), or at most broken down into rotating through three days (PPL variations). Compounds make up the large majority of my training. Rep ranges make more sense based on the movement I'm doing. Never neglecting legs.

Oh and instead of being a twinkie beanpole I ballooned over the last couple years (Thanks Co-Bama) to a maximum weight of like 242 and am now slow cutting rather than perpetually bulking lol.

At the start? Used dumb bells like an idiot and the gym I went to was a glorified hotel gym. Routine was somewhat a bro split but lack of knowledge had me skip a ton of different muscles (legs, traps, back, lats)

Focused too much on protein shakes and garbage protein sources like bars or chipotle every other meal. Would do cardio but just go on random runs

Biggest jumps I’ve seen is moving to clean food , recording cardio activity for progress (miles, pace, heart rate, etc) and going from dumb bell BS to barbell compounds (probably the biggest jump there). When I first started working out I didn’t touch legs because I thought if I wore jeans who would care lol

The supplement talk is kind of interesting too.

Early on I didn't take any - I didn't have money for them. But once I started making money I got protein powder basically right away and it's mostly been a staple for years now. Most recently though I've kind of shied away from protein powder, but I now take Zinc, Vit. D, Fish Oil, BCAA+EAA, Creatine, daily. I oftentimes take Arginine pre-WO, but not always. And I like Liquid IV for electrolyte repletion.

Now

-Added training legs, but stopped squatting(hello knee injuries from hockey)
-Higher reps/sets med-high weight, focus on progressive overload at these levels instead of just lifting as heavy as I can(sports wrecked my body and this increases my time under tension and injuries don’t flare up as much. Tore my PCL in college, separated both shoulders at separate times in the last 15 years. Lifting heavy as I can often brings about pain)
-Cardio outside of hockey MAYBE once a week, excluding a couple mile walks on the weekend

-upped my calories closer to maintenance, but still in a deficit. No more cheat days(used to have a severe deficit 6 days a week so I can binge on Sat nights. Now I just have a consistent small deficit, avoid higher calorie foods but fit in things to get my sweet tooth fix)
-started using a food scale on calorie dense food so I can have it without guilt, hello peanut butter
-no longer doing keto, was okay but I felt like I was cheating being dehydrated and seeing abs, so I no longer worry about that
- drinking Atleast my bodyweight in water

I used to only focus on cardio intensely and not as focused on lifting. That’s completely changed from when I started fitness. Never again. Also, I still IF, but I probably won’t PSMF again. Not that it doesn’t work, but I don’t need it to diet. It’s a great tool though.

Supplements just Creatine and protein powder. I’ll grab a C4 for preworkout if I feel I need one but I don’t want to keep tossing 40$ at tubs when I really don’t need it. No longer take BCAA’s to flavor my water.

I may be moving to an adjacent city for a new job so I’ll have to change gyms. I may take that as an opportunity to focus on form/muscle memory connection and change up my routine a tad

I was part of the GNC crew, spending a hundred a month at least on supplements. I also ate like chit because of retarded broscience iifym. Eating poptarts and getting fat, etc.

As far as workouts I didn't bother with the basics, laying a good foundation. I had **** cardio endurance, I spent too much time in isolation exercises because I was confused and retarded about how my physique was supposed to look. 16 minutes of elliptical was my leg day, hahaha...

Now I found what exercises work best for me (flat bench > incline, imo) and focusing on getting good at the basic lifts rather than training specifically to make certain body parts bigger. I also keep everything varied so things are always difficult

I train with less volume but do pretty much every set to failure. My diet is higher in protein and carbs with lower fats. And for supplements I use celltech now instead of wasting money on chit that doesn't work

Literally every aspect seems to be every evolving...

Phase 1:

Started lifting in the 7th grade and quickly realized I was naturally stronger than 99% of the other kids.. which morphed into..

"I'm a Powerlifter"

-eating constantly
-bloatlord 101
-train for 1RM
-if it wasnt bolted to the fkn ground I could lift it

I do not regret taking this path at a young age because it ultimately built a solid LBM that I have never lost...

But... I Powerlifted well into college until I figured out I was tired of coping with the fact I was a fat body and it was never going to get me anywhere other than injured ---->

Phase 2:

Imma Body Builder...

-Lean ALL the way out *BRB STRIATED GLUTES AF*
-Focus on muscle size , shape , tie in's
-Moving less weight
-More Reps
-Lean meats , low carbs... etc.
-watch every Macro entering my body

Until I figured out I look amazing but as I was getting older realized what I was going to have to do to maintain that lifestyle wasn't going to be very conducive to any sort of longevity

Phase 3 (Current):

-Maintain a fair amount of LBM
-Make healthier choices as far as lifting & nutrition is concerned
-Maintain more sustainable BF% but still stay within striking distance of single digit BF for special occasions
-More Cardio
-Less time in the gym and more time with the family

If I am honest I havent completely settled into or accepted all aspects of this particular phase yet. A lot I am still trying to figure out and become more comfortable with mentally. I spent well over 10 years doing everything I could to put it all on... now trying to take a little off here and there which I mentally knows is the right decision....Seeing it in the mirror quickly fks it all up and I slip right back into what I know... and repeat.

Used to think I had to eat tuna, now I don't

Used to think I had to have protein shakes, now I don't

Originally never ate vegetables and thought they were pointless, now I do and realize they're not

Used to work out 45 min - 1 hr, now it's more like 1 hr 30 min.

Used to do cardio and/or abs at the end of lifting, now I pair cardio and abs together and do it at separate time in the day from lifting

Do more supersets now which really helped with progression

Used to approximate my calories at first, now I track and measure with a scale
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I went through one phase where I was convinced I had to chug a protein shake in the middle of the night to remain anabolic throughout a 24 hour day lmao

Basically I would get up to piss (which was normal routine) and I would pull a pre-made shake out of the fridge afterward and chug it before going back to bed.

Focus more on cardio - previously never did cardio bc I was afraid of losing muscle but with running I’m more shredded than ever.

Exercising 5+ days / week instead of 3-4. I really notice a difference with almost daily exercise I’m always looking good and feeling better.

You probably would have to do that sort of thing if you were an IFBB pro

lmao, I legit went through this phase as well. Also - ensuring to get that post workout protein shake in immediately to prevent going catabolic........ lulz.

Gonna spread some more reps around when off recharge, hit some people already.

I basically went back to what I did in 2012 as it worked then and what I've done the past few years hasn't worked. Plus I stopped lifting and did bands like Tom Brady in the beginning of the pandemic, which did nothing for me.

Now I'm back to the following since March (except the 1600 a day and IF status, that's recent):

- Eat about 140g of protein a day
- 2 protein shakes a day
- Ensure I eat plenty of fruits and veggies
- Eat around 1600 calories a day
- Lift 3x a week instead of 6x a week and do cardio the other days
- Changed from being vegan to being a lacto-ovo vegetarian
- Trying IF and eating from 12pm to 8pm
- Non natty status

So far I'm quite happy with the results.

Training (in the beginning, 2005-2006)
- brosplit all day
- skipped legs
- flat bench for life
- arms 2-3x a week.
- horrid form on just about everything

Diet
- Gotta eat 6-7x a day
- chicken + brown rice
- gotta have Casein protein before bed
- $200 of supplements a month

Fast forward to 2022

Training
- Tried everything, but enjoy brosplit or Conjugate System the best.
- primary focus on technique and form
- Never flat bench
- Legs 2x a week
- less focus on weight, more focus on improvement moving the weight.

Diet
- Red meat > everything
- down to 3-4 meals day
- only supplements are health focused ( Vit C, D3, Omega-3s.....no more Anator P70 or Gakic, lulz)
- don't even use protein shakes nowadays

Hell yeah. I did the same benching 5 days a week and got my bench to 285. I couldn't air squat to parallel though lmao.

Almost exactly the same for me. Just not legs 2x week. Workouts are way more efficient, less time, less joint pain.
