Thinking of buying a carpet steamer then returning it.
Is that a chitty thing to do? My carpet is dirty and I don't want to spend money.

All the soap and chit, plus your own labor @ minimum wage for your jurisdiction to repackage and create the illusion that you aren't a poorcel who just bought something to use it once and return it, gas costs, etc.
It seems to me that you're going to come out about the same whether you rent it, or launch this hare-brained scheme OP.

Best price to results balance: rent from Lowe's [$30 for a one day rental, better machine that works on both the push and pull stroke], pre-treat worst stains with Folex, use hot water and a minimal amount of cleaning solution, and suck out as much water as possible...don't be lazy about that part.
^^^
Have done this multiple times. But my brother [used to live here] finally wrecked the carpets too badly.
I've bought ceramic tile to replace it. And even I think I'm sort of crazy to take that on, but something needs to be done. I don't like having gross floors.
