When someone says “my partner” I always assume they’re gay….

Is that a fair assumption? Why can’t people just say my boyfriend/girlfriend? This cute girl told me this yesterday that she moved with her “partner” does this mean a girl, guy, dog or some mix of all three?

Why does it matter? I've noticed that as people get older, they find it kind of juvenile to say 'girlfriend/boyfriend.'
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

I also first think that the connotations of “partner” in the context of a romantic relationship imply a same sex couple. However, I have come to acknowledge that it is also used by people who’re culturally hard left as a non-gendered form of boyfriend/girlfriend. As an outcrop of that, it’s also used by the oversocialized as a politically correct term.

As far as I know, the usage of the term partner among straight people is extremely recent.

I literally never heard a straight person use the term in that way until maybe five years ago.

Up until then it was only gay people. So it’s not strange that you think that way.

I still think that way too.

Seems like millennials and zoomers will tend to say partner instead of boyfriend or girlfriend, as well as boomers who shack up with each other at an old age. But I agree, I automatically think gay when someone says that.

Since I got married I always say "my wife".

Before being married I would probably say "my partner" if I was having a conversation in a professional capacity, because to me (rightly or wrongly) it kind of sounds less childish than saying "my girlfriend".

I also think "partner" makes it sound more long term, whereas a girlfriend could be someone you've been with a week, or will break up with next week. This is just my perception of the terms.

I put down my wife as my partner before we got married so she could qualify for my medical and dental insurance from work.



But actually use that term in conversation? Just lol that’s gay.

Spouse has always been gender neutral so idk why the term would change for that reason
