.22LR is best for self protection.
Say someone is trying to hurt you but that person themselves isn't armed, you shoot them with an .22, which stops the perp in his tracks, giving you enough time to get away.
You've accomplished two thangs:
- you spared his life
- you stopped the perp
You are statistically more likely to encounter this situation than facing off with a mass shooter, who's 5.56 is going to push your chit in, or be in a pistol shootout.
Therefore, the .22 is the best for self defense, imo. Not the 9mm because it's too strong.
If you are defending your home though, 9mm is better since you are confined. Therefore you can't take any chances with the perp living after being shot for they still have the ability to push after you and overpower you(in a confined space).

If somebody isn’t armed but trying to hurt then you just kick their ass not shoot them.
As far as home protection is concerned Why tf would you want to spare their life? People who perform home invasions are the lowest form of person.

Not everyone can throw hands. And throwing hands can be dangerous(they can body slam you on your head)

Bb gun for self defense crew checkin in. I gauge my response according to the specific threat at hand. If I'm getting robbed with gun, I give the perp a 10 pumper, if I'm getting raped then I pump it once.

But yea, if you are both the same size, its safer to throw hands. But not when the weight class is different.

Count me as disagreeing. Some crack head on drugs won't even be phased by a 22. You have to put holes in him with ammo that spreads out on impact so he will lose so much blood quickly that he can't attack you anymore. Especially if he has a knife or something.
.380 with hollow points minimum. 9MM or larger is even better if you can handle the recoil.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

The .22 is strong enough to penetrate the angus without going in too deep and cracking skulls. Once the skin is penetrated, your nervous system kicks in and you really can't do anything else(the knife will be dropped). You also have to consider that the bullet is also scorching hot once it enter the angus.
If you are out in the open and the other person has a knife, you really shouldn't be even considering talking to that person but get away at a good distance. But I'm talking about when the other person isn't armed.

Pull out a 45acp and give verbal warnings, if they leave, good, if they don't, you have the power to end the situation and be the only one to testify
