If you don’t turn video on during meetings you are a weirdo and limiting your career

Only people who don’t have normal social skills don’t turn their video on during meetings.

I’ve been on plenty of calls where we all have our cameras turned on and one weirdo can’t be bothered with turning their video on

That just screams not a team player, lack of social skills, which will halt any type of career advancement.

Can’t believe there are some people so lazy that they can’t even be bothered to turn their cameras on during a meeting.

Met with a prospective company we wanted to do business with. Turn my cam on, and they don't have theirs on. I'm wearing athleisure and they proceed to turn their cams on and they're wearing hoodies. People can be rather insecure about appearance in business.

My company promotes a laid back atmosphereso I regularly meet with companies and the poor saps have suits on. Imagine traveling for business and having to pack a suit.

Nah it's a place of business I'm here to be heard not seen. No real reason why you should have to see a live video feed of the person when talking about TPS reports. If they want something visual they can schedule an in-person meeting like a professional and see me then.

But nah Zoom4lyfe cuz we are cool hip millennials.

Would rather a person leave the camera off than to have some gay ass glamour shot of themselves showing.

In the majority of meetings I've been in, whether it's Zoom, Google Meet, Skype or whatever other platform, most people keep their cameras off. Some times we'll share screens, but most of the time, all cameras are off.
I use these meetings as a time to get other stuff done. Laundry, dishes, recycling and trash, get some time in on the stationary bike.

If you have your camera on and you are not a speaker, I can tell you're a zoomer that really needs attention so I will ignore you.

I haven't been in a meeting in the last 2 years that had less than 12 people in it....and multiple people sharing documents throughout. We are actually asked to keep our cameras off.

That being said......I'm usually the only if not 1 of 2 that have a profile pic......95% of people I interact with just have the circle with their initials and do not give a chit about seeing who their talking to.

If I'm meeting 1 on 1 with someone Ill turn my camera on but only if they want to. Most 1 on 1's involve sharing/going over documents and nobody wants to look at anybody elses stupid face.

I am an old guy and I run a fairly large sized organization (no e-brag). The company I work for has been almost 100% virtual for the last decade. Companies that are new to virtual working due to Covid want you to have your camera on because they are still petrified someone might be sitting on a beach or they simply want "face time"..

After a decade of managing a global at home employee work base - I dont care about externalities outside of the fact you get your work done.

Give it a decade and all of these new work from home companies wont care one bit about having video on...

You'll get points deducted for not having your camera on in CC when virtual classes was a thing.

my last employer told us all that there were to be no cameras on during calls due to the amount of bandwidth it took up. Only one or two people use theirs at my current job. Most of us having dual monitors and a dock station so our laptops are be default closed all day. Mine is actually backwards to me because the port for the dock station is on the opposite side

Camera off crew.

The fact OP cares so much about what other people are doing rather than worrying about himself just exposes how beta he is.

Do all my calls on a phone unless I need to screen share then I join on my PC while still doing voice on the phone. They get double black boxes from me.

Sometimes I wonder how some people even manage day-to-day in-person meetings in a conference room.

Thankfully no one at my job ever turns theirs on. The 1 or 2 "team players" that did thankfully gave up.

The older I get I realize most people's careers aren't about their skillset but rather how they manage their relationships and how they communicate with people so yeah I definitely agree with you OP.

I just mimic the room srs.

If everyone is doing cameras on, I turn it on. If not, I turn it off.

I feel like this is the best move at this time.

I wear hoodies and tshirts all the time in my virtual meetings, and always have the camera on.

It’s just more respectful to the person you’re speaking with and allows for body language to be read as well.

I probably won’t promote anyone that doesn’t get on camera during meetings. It’s not the not getting on camera as the reason, it’s what it says about the person who doesn’t, particularly a lack of social skills. The higher up a person advances, the more social skills the person needs to have.
