Never about performance? Come on, read that over and over again and see how ludicrous and emotional that sounds.

My experience in corp america has typically been that upper management passed down to me a number that needed to be cut and it was either completely my decision or it was co-guided.
In most cases it was pretty clear cut who the top performers were from the bottom.
In one case all my team were rock stars (designed that way.....already moved the under performers out) and I made the case to upper management and I was able to keep everyone.

I am not saying this is how it always is.....but that was my experience which is different from what your friends told you.

But if you haven taken the advice of your "past managers" about taking it easy for said reasons.....then yes that will show pretty easily and I can see how someone like that would be on the bottom of my list even if they were marginally out producing someone that was trying hard. I can coach and skill up someone. I dont have the time to fix lazy and negative in a fast moving world.
Wait lol you're also just another person telling me how it works, just like everyone else I'm referencing. Why should I dismiss them but believe you if you're saying I need first hand experience.

The people I'm talking about have done it too. Your experience holds no more weight than theirs

Im not telling you to dismiss them and believe me. I am giving you additional perspective as well as calling out the fact that your previous statements arent coming from experience but from second hand knowledge.
Then any smart and logical person can deduce what might the best path of action in the world of corporate america.

I mean the layoffs I've seen happen in front of my eyes would suggest its not about performance most of the time either. If anything it seems seniority or salary. Its a cliche but I've seen the guy that bust azz the most be the one laid off. Maybe they were making more money though who knows

people that bust azz aren't always efficient. You can work hard all day long and still not get enough done.

Think about that.

The notion thst they are worth that compensation because of the market is a myth you've bought into. Were the Enron execs worth their bonuses because they used clever mark to market accounting procedures and then dumped the stock while their options were hot before bankrupting middle management?

Keep drinking that Kool aid, brah.
I didn't say anything about ingenuity. And I didn't say 99% of the population are lacking skills.

It's not a myth, it's been studied by top schools several times. Enron, no you are correct they cooked their books. But at the time of that scandal there was a, for the lack of a better word, witch hunt to find other corps/execs that were pulling similar shenanigans. How many did they find, a dozen? Not even. There are over 5,000 companies on the NYSE and thousands more on the other exchanges and they found a dozen that were problematic. So that wasn't exactly a widespread issue. The other companies continue to perform to shareholder expectations so yea, the top executives were well worth their compensation or they get replaced.

It wasn't until the middle class began investing on a large scale that we began demanding executive pay to be tied to corporate performance and that is when their pay skyrocketed.

Dont like what I do, dont hate it either. Its just a job that pays me enough that I can have some of the things I want. But I honestly cant imagine doing this for 30+ much years.

Im not the type of person that will ever have a job I actually like, I just dont enjoy anything I could ever make a career out of. Just another reason Im aiming to die by 40.

Same and idk how people enjoy their monotonous jobs. Literally doing the same thing all day every day. How are people enjoying this?

It's basically just literally rotting unless you're a tradie going out and building chit. At least you get fresh air and can see different chit. Other jobs are lame af tbh

Now is a good chance to get rid of non-performers. Who always seem to get better jobs actually. I see them on linkedin and they all moved up to better positions with better pay.

My dad got laid off a few years back and got a massive bump in pay, crazy equity growth and double pay for like 4 months basically from severance + new job.

I got laid off in Covid and got a job with more pay, better benefits and fully remote. Then I had an even better offer and went to that.

You gotta go get yours in this economy OP.

Oh dude I totally get that. I have often said I would never try to create a business out of something I love because then I'll hate it. Except maybe if I start doing OF.

I have seriously considered quitting my job to become a mailman cause the walking would be good for me and I could still get a government pension by 65. But I question if the USPS will even exist in 20 years so the paycut might not be worth it

First of all I said that.....but to the point.....it depends on a lot of factors (as I was thinking the same thing Cleveland 33 was)

a. The hardest worder doesnt always provide the most impact. While I do believe there is a lot of corp BS going on, often times while it may be perceived that Corp Execs are not working hard......they are still adding value to the company and that is what matters

b. What I said was in context to two people, in similar positions with different attitudes about the position. If they are close in productivity, but one is hard working but on the lesser output as someone who is not as hard working, higher producing but doesnt care.....then i am choosing the person with less output/harder worker. That point supports the fact that not everything is solely dependent on black and white numbers when it comes to layoffs. Thats why managerial feedback sought after.

I don't see how this is late stage capitalism.

Going by the article, the company overextended when things were rosy and capitalised too much (i.e. brought on too much staff), reducing staff/expenditure during a downturn is just normal market forces. If this results in greater profits, this means more dividends for shareholders who will naturally reward the execs for it. Think of it this way, those new staff jobs should have never existed in the first place and the individuals employed in such capacity already have a net gain equal to the period of employment.

Late stage capitalism is when lobby groups formed by a few well capitalised individuals influence decisions that is against the greater good of your country and people for their own profit maximising benefit. e.g.

- Lobbying lawmakers to eliminate laws that prevent foreign countries from buying strategic utility assets (i.e. your telecom, electricity grid, gas, internet stack etc). Think China acquiring internet infra, ports etc.
- Lobbying lawmakers to introduce regulations that ponzify real estate (i.e. relaxing foreign investment, planning regulations in cities that prevent high-density development, low land tax, allowing people to own multiple properties in capital cities, allowing people to buy properties through superannuation funds at a reduced tax rate, allowing rental expenses that exceed rental income to be claimed as a income deduction).

Capitalism leads to corruption. It's a flawed system due to human nature. I've been trying to tell capitalist nuthuggers this for years.

The best way to solve the world's problem is remove human greed from the equation. We should be reasonable, e.a. you can own a nice house and nice cars, but there's no reason to own a $15 million dollar yacht, alligator jackets, etc.

Through laws and discipline you can. Don't get me wrong, there should be a lot of incentive to do well in life, e.a. a Mansion, nice cars, and luxury vacations. But a yacht, speed boats, and a golden toilet aren't needed. Carving up animal skins to wear isn't needed. $500 steaks aren't needed.

It's all greed and vanity and needs to be destroyed.

-More fair politics for the lower and middle class.
-Resources are spread out more
-Less poor
-Workers are paid more
-More time with family vs. Slaving for the mighty dollar
-Less debt. Less stress

Of course a lot of those fall on personal choices, but I believe in 'indoctrination' and brain washing. We need to teach People and hold their hands to grow up and not be greedy and vain.

That's the finite pie myth. Capping someone's wealth doesn't mean other people get that money. To achieve what you are talking about, you would have to encourage people to succeed then forcefully take their wealth from them and redistribute it.

America is a country with the highest depression rates. While people in simpler less luxurious countries are often happier.

Social media and Capitalism has done a number on people
Depression Rates Around the World
Depression affects about 1 in 15 adults in any given year, and 1 in 6 people will experience depression at some time in their life.
