What’s the difference between a doomsday prepper and just a smart person?

This is what I have at the moment

-10 years worth of 20 year shelf life food for 2 people
-8 propane tanks
-100 gallons of water in storage bins
-M1 Garand with 500 rounds. Shotgun with 200.
-Several first aid kits and a handful of antibiotics

I live in a suburb on Long Island, NY away from the city thank God. What else do I need, if anything? Am I a doomsday prepper just because I have these items as an insurance policy for an emergency? Because I’ve watched hardcore doomsday preppers and see what they have and it’s way more than this. I think a lot of those people are kinda hoping for a bad recession/depression to justify their purchases but I’m not one of them. I’ve seen what happens with people panic-buying during hurricanes, Covid, etc and I’d rather not be one of those people who wait.

If I really wanted to I could sell off a lot of these items but I can’t see that happening. The dollar might crash and be worthless but these items will always retain value.

IMO, the real difference is the extent to which a doomsday prepper plans.


You're prepared for a difficult time or an unforeseen disaster which leaves you without vital infrastructure for days or a few weeks max.


Doomsday preppers are ready for the literal end of the freakin' world. TEOTWAKI: The End of the World as We Know It. Zombie apocalypse. Asteroid Strike. Solar Flare. Global Economic Collapse. They're ready to start a whole new life and survive when the world has literally ended due to a mass extinction event.


Take your case as comparison. Let's say something utterly catastrophic happens and the Earth can no longer support life. Is what your OP described enough?

I wouldn’t use this quote to justify carrying a handgun around with a defaced serial number because getting a CCP in NY is next to impossible but what I have is all legal and really not all that much money all things considered.

Do you have a generator? That's something I didn't see on your list.

IMO most people need enough for about a couple of weeks of survival without power, because if things get worse than that it's going to be anarchy to the level you probably won't want to survive anyway.

Yea if there’s an actual end of the world apocalyptic event, I don’t think I’d even wanna survive that sh!t because that kind of life doesn’t seem worth living. But I have plenty of necessities for anything less than 10 years and if I wanted to sell some to other people for a really marked up price I would have that option. I have relatives out in Kansas that have a crazy amount more than I do, plus a large underground bunker. I won’t be anywhere near as well off as them but I think I’d be okay in a relatively short term emergency.

I shouldn’t have said always for that part I misspoke. I could sell it for half price in 10 years and then just buy another batch of 20 year shelf life food.

I do have a generator but only have about 6 12 gallon gas tanks I use for my boat which I didn’t put in the water this summer. I don’t wanna store that much gasoline just yet but maybe I should. I have a siphon and could always pump them into my car before they go bad and just keep putting fresh gas in them.

Well I can always buy more fortunately. 500 rounds of 30-06 and 200 shotgun shells….idk how many people would be storming my house that I’d have to take out, lol. But can’t hurt to have more I guess. Have more than enough 2x4’s to board up my windows and doors if it really came to that.

My dad fell for this nonsense prior to "Y2K" Bought a bunch of MRE's bagged and bottled water canned food and built a second shed in the backyard to hoard a bunch of stuff. and here we are 22 years later, the shed has since flooded a couple times due to leaks in the roof and the vast majority of it is not even salvageable.

I keep all my stuff in the basement so it’s safe and I didn’t need to spend money on a shed. Plus the whole Y2K thing was kinda silly. And if something bad did happen, he’d have been damn happy to have had them. It’s not like this stuff costs an arm and a leg to buy either. If you buy it all at once then yea it might be a good chunk of cash but at the end of the day it’s really not a high-risk investment. At least not to me.

This is a part of the scenario that often goes overlooked. If chit goes, it's going to go fast, and it's going to be bleak. People are going to do what they do in normal everyday life, and that's clique up. Build groups, and go after resources. You might have a few scavengers just hoping to get their hands on a can of beans, or some spare ammo, or anything they can eat or barter with. Those can usually be handled with a couple well placed rounds, but what happens when 10 people approach you? Those 700 rounds are going to get eaten into. How many sieges can you take? People who didn't stock up...REALLY stock up are going to be preserving ammo, and will be looting hardware stores for mele weapons. How long do your 2x4's hold up against axes, rakes, ho's, etc? Your best bet would probably be to buy some cheap land in bumfuk nowhere, that you can access without having to use main roads and use that as base camp. Tell a select few friends, go in on building a structure that you can retreat to. So when SHTF you guys can mobilize your team, your goods and GTFO.

1. BUY MORE AMMO
2. Make sure you have unregistered guns...put them in bags vacuum seal/heat seal, bury in backyard. Because things are going to go at once, it will build up slow, but when it goes...it's will be a 5 alarm blaze...If the gov't has a read on it, they're coming for the registered guns first.

3. create an alliance/ group of like minded friends, and establish a bug out plan

I really don’t think I’m being unreasonable here. I wouldn’t wanna survive some crazy end of the world apocalypse but I like knowing I have more than enough supplies for a short to intermediate emergency.

I phrased the thread the way I did because I wanted to see if people thought I was going overboard or that I needed more items than this. I do think that I’m somewhere in the middle between taking out a smart insurance policy/investment, but I don’t think I’m so hardcore to the point I’m preparing for the end of the world. Not sure how this got you so mad but alright.

I think if you live in the suburbs or the city you're absolutely fuked in the event of a WROL situation. Lone wolf preppers will get overwhelmed by lawless gangs in a matter of days, not even a week for most.

Your best bet is fleeing to the countryside and having survival skills. Guns and food are important, but knowledge and common sense is even more so.

From what I've seen Doomsday Dudes go hard but might be a bit misguided. Smart people prep for the most likely emergencies - for me, that means things like recession / job loss, natural disaster, illness. Yes I have basic preps stored, but those things aren't helpful if I don't have a strong community and friendships with my neighbors, am reasonably fit, etc.
Train hard, train smart, have fun!

I appreciate the well thought out reply and I’m not disagreeing or agreeing with it completely.

I can buy more ammo which is easy and relatively cheap. But who is gonna try to take people’s guns if they know sh!t is about to hit the fan? Who is gonna sign up for that? Cops and/or the military? Those guys usually side with the constitution and are probably smart enough to know the insane casualty rate that comes with clearing houses. Even in this liberal state of NY, I know sooooo many people who have mini arsenals of guns. It’s not rare at all.

I obviously have the money to buy the stuff I have, but at the moment I can’t really buy land in the middle of nowhere and convince a bunch of family/friends/acquaintances to go in on building some fortress. It’s just not practical to me.

Even if I got a bunch of like-minded friends to do this with, (which isn’t easy), they’re gonna prioritize their families and possibly take me and the rest of the group out to hoard the supplies for themselves. During an event like this, family is gonna take priority over friends no matter how long you’ve known each other.

Lol except you don’t know who else has guns and ammo and you’d be wiser to assume that they all do. Defensive positions are paramount in this situation and the last thing you wanna do is go on the offensive to gather supplies.

I obviously have the money to buy the stuff I have, but at the moment I can’t really buy land in the middle of nowhere and convince a bunch of family/friends/acquaintances to go in on building some fortress. It’s just not practical to me.

Even if I got a bunch of like-minded friends to do this with, (which isn’t easy), they’re gonna prioritize their families and possibly take me and the rest of the group out to hoard the supplies for themselves. During an event like this, family is gonna take priority over friends no matter how long you’ve known each other.
You know the "Great Reset" is coming to destroy everything you own.
