Need career advice (SRS) (REPS)

I’m a croupier, earning $27.91/hr Aussie dollars. Double time Sundays, 1.5x Saturdays.

I’m only guaranteed 15 hours a week, and my roster changes constantly. I’m really not happy with the inconsistency and the low pay. Also, night shift sucks ass. Feel like it’s slowly killing me.

The question is, WTF do I do instead? I never went to uni. I never got an ATAR. I completed high school and did a few low-level TAFE courses. But really not sure what to pursue now.

My gf is studying to become a data analyst, so she’s all set. But I’m not happy earning $35-40k Aussie per year (that’s like $25k American). My job is hard, repetitive work yet I’m poor.

If I want a family one day, the low pay and weird hours suck ass. I want to be the provider, not have my future wife be the breadwinner.

What are some good career paths for someone with average intelligence who’s willing to apply themselves and study hard for the next few years?

1)take a massive gamble and start your own business which will likely fail

2) become a tradie (**** work imo but pay is good in oz)

Not a gambling brah so 1 doesn’t appeal to me. As for 2…I was a roofer for a day and wanted to blow my brains out. Don’t know how people put up with that chit day in, day out

Are there any fields that interest you that would be feasible to enter?

Whether entry level or after some course work?

Any big dreams that might now be the time to pursue and make a living out of?

There are a lot of ways to approach this.

I feel for you man. That kind of sucks. So there is no quick answer obviously, and no matter what you do, it is going to involve some discomfort and risk.

Either you are (or will become) so uncomfy in your situation that the discomfort of the change and uncertainty about the future will be less uncomfortable than your situation. That is a rock bottom. That is a strong motivating factor.

I first recommend learning. Just read books on financial responsibility, research various opportunities you in whatever fields you are interested in and learn how to achieve those with and without your own money. Develop a mindset that is comfortable being uncomfortable, and a mindset that wants to grow and learn and not stop.

Do these things for you, and only you. Cooperate and maintain mutually beneficial relationships, but take as much as you ****ing can from everyone you can. (I am talking about everything from life lessons, to general help, etc.).

Help other people achieve what you are trying to achieve. You will learn how to achieve that thing with them. This has helped me greatly, and I respond well to external pressure/accountability. It helps me.

Learn everyday like your life depends on it.

Or lay down and rot. There are no other courses of action to take.

I have noticed implementing this type of behavior in my life has contributed greatly to a higher standard of living, and other respectable people I have had this conversation with suggest the same.

No matter what you do man, ****ing do it. And good luck. srs.


(also, get rid of all your toxic friends even if that means you are alone for a while. Surround yourself with like minded people. Elevate them and let them elevate you, instead of being around people who bring you down. I am making assumptions here, please disregard if I am wrong).

But 1 is not suitable for most people.

Spend time checking different Tafe/tradies option ask different people not just once. You will get better more suited options when you ask many times Tradies of carer councillors.
Some paths have many options. From memory Restricted electrician licence can be achieved easier than open electrician license. one is light industrial other is domestic houses and needs more training.
Once you get some qualifications your pay bracket automatically goes up. Even if you are not the best. As you are now it is very difficult to get better pay.
Dont go for the useless easy certificates. Do a more established role. Look for job requirements/pay in job advertisements. That gives you an indicator of what to expect.
Also a qualification puts you a step closer to a managerial role after a few years of experience.

Also why TF did you choose roofer? --Do something more established == better job/pay.

I would focus on one thing at a time. For starters the hours.

Even if you get paid the same rate if you worked 40 hours a week, days m-f it would be a considerable improvement.

Most jobs can get you that. You already have customer service skills so that would be an easy transition.

Once you get normal hours and paychecks, you can start working on the next phase which would be training for an actual career that you want to do.

One step at a time is the key.

IT is pretty easy to get into. Take a few classes and get a low level certification. Easy to find an easy job where you misc all day.

I’d probably go the IT route too.

You’ll probably start as a help desk analyst buy that would only be 2 years.

Or maybe an air con engineer. Big in Oz. Still a tradie but not back breaking.

Step 1 I would research growing and in demand fields in your region of the world and look into which one's appeal to you and then see what you need to do to start training/schooling in that field.

Get into IT.

Doesn't matter the age, education, etc.

Study for certs relevant to a field you find intrigue in. Get those certs. Apply to jobs.

Literally have coworkers on my team where it's their first job in the industry and they came from irrelevant backgrounds and irrelevant degrees at the ages of 30-45.

Become a bee keeper. I went to the farmers market the other day and the lady was selling jars of honey for like $30 and they were selling quick. Some of the smaller bottles were around $9.

Ok gonna give a serious answer but you’ll need to check with the relevant master builders association to see if it’s viable

Get a trade - whether it’s a carpenter, plumber, electrician or whatever. Doesn’t really matter. Key hurdle will be getting someone to take you on. I don’t know if you’re too old, I certainly was, but check in your state and territory.

From there, get yourself a builders license. Even if it’s just C-class you can do basic on-grade dwellings with an upper storey.

Find an appropriate block with an old house on it, idk if your woman will buy it as an investment property or what.

Rent it out as a tax deduction. Try to keep operating costs/maintenance to a minimum while you get a development approval through your council.

If you can’t afford to do the development, get all the permits and sell it to a developer. Otherwise do it yourself, rent them units out for a few years to get CGT concessions and depreciation, and sell for a profit. Do this every few years and you’re on your way to a seven-figure income.

Get a job in employment services, you would have pretty strong customer service skills

There are heaps of jobs for work advisors at the moment due to the new contract and new providers
