Has anyone crossed over to Software Engineering for the fat TCs? (300k+)

Even after the adjustments of Q1 and Q2, it is clear that software engineers are making much more than any other white collar

New hires at amazon are clearing 300k per year (salary+stock+bonus), so why not? It seems too tempting for a businesscel like me

Software engineering managers are clearing 700k whereas their business peers at the same level hardly break the 400k barrier

You are way over estimating those salaries. The people making that kind of money are tall super Chad geniuses. And you're a manlet, baby.

Go look up their average salary.

400k+ for mid levels these days (you will need to be extra special and good at what you do). not even senior.

for FAANGS, expect...

150-180k, entry level (new grads)
190-400k, mid level (wide range, but the 400ks are the outliers, a more reasonable range would be like 200-325k)
325k-450k, senior level
400-700k+, staff level

Started a career in I.T so far it is pretty smack ass in piss city. Seems to be lots of room for reasonably fast advancement compared to most careers as I am already looking at advancing fairly substantially in < 1 year time; however, It is also seemingly a bit flooded as there are a ton of people who are absolute trash which makes companies nervous to hire and anybody with a day or a single credit hour more then you in education will always get picked over you so I would just make sure to be learning and getting certified in as much as you can. I would also keep in mind the switch from traditional networking to a more-so cloud/security based role which is not easy to go straight into but I would not spend to much time on networking as it is no longer what it used to be but if one wants to get into more technical work certainly put some time into that as being a sys-admin is limiting as fook and really just a glorified help-desk. Not to mention coding is not for most people either and databases and chit like that are not very common to find jobs in and you will most likely just be managing active directory or something.

im mid level. TC is 295k, but with the stocks dropping its closer to 270k. i got promo'd into my current level. if a person was hired externally, they'd make 325k+ easily (pre stock drop).

You probably wouldn't pass the bar for Amazon. They have a high bar for engineering hires. I think last I heard it was a 1 in 25 pass rate for onsite interviews there.

You realize the people earning those $$ are the top percentage in tech? For every 1 person earning a comp like that, there are a 100 engineers working at random companies making a regular salary $120-160k base salary as a Senior Engineer with maybe a bonus

Sorry to tell you but those are pretty common salaries for tech in a large firm like AWS.
But you dont just one day "decide" to be a software engineer and suddenly become good at it. Like anything, it takes time........thats why early on you need to consider where the hockey puck is headed and try to intercept it vs doing what OP is doing and looking to turn on a dime.

They arent handing out $350k TC jobs to first year software engineers even if you are naturally talented.

^This is the facts. I make +300k at a FANG at my age. My IQ is in the range 125-130, and I put in a lot of work to get here.

You can very easily make that salary if you apply for a remote position in San Francisco. Even entry level is about $150k (125k+an annual 25k bonus)

I got a Bachelor's degree in Comp Sci. Decided to go into cyber security instead.

Starter pay was $60k, no bonuses, Office daily, unpaid overtime.

Fast forward 5 years and my new job I'm facing is $115k-120k base, annual bonus of 20%, overtime pay, fully remote.

I'm envious of the pay some peers make who went the programming/software engineering route. Know a guy I graduated with who has a salary nearing $180k.

My reasoning behind not wanting to program is PTSD from multiple programming projects where I spent hours trying to fix a compilation error, only to find out the root cause was a single line of code.

You don't just step into those salaries unless you are actually good. The interview process is no cakewalk and you can't fake it.

4.0 GPA Computer Science degree and 7.5 years experience here and changed jobs 4 times for comp increases. Started at 72k/year and this will be the first year I make > 300k. Of course this is working remote from MN. It would be a lot easier in CA or Seattle but then again $300k doesn't go nearly as far there.
