I just spent 3 weeks figuring out 1 bug that was introduced by someone else in a rebase and broke an obscure code path that I was using. **** can be a real mind**** especially when you are dealing with hardware.

That's likely just his base pay too. My base is just under $180k but with bonuses and stock it will be > $300k this year. Software definitely pays well if you are any good.

Generally only the lower level people write significant amounts of code. The higher you get the less code you write, but you do have to have a deep understanding of it. It's only mentally draining if you hate coding. I have coworkers who code on personal projects in their free time because they don't get enough coding time at work.

My brother has a masters degree in machine learning and earned $180k starting at Amazon to work remote. The pay bands listed below are accurate vvv

150-180k, entry level (new grads)
190-400k, mid level (wide range, but the 400ks are the outliers, a more reasonable range would be like 200-325k)
325k-450k, senior level
400-700k+, staff level
Also, Amazon runs a churn-n-burn style operation, and few people even stay there for 5 years. They seriously treat their engineers about as well as their warehouse workers, they just pay them more. Bro had to switch manager reports because his OG manager didn't have a free 15 mins a week for a one on one. DFS.

He ended up dropping them to work govt consulting. Dude literally cut his compensation in half but slashed his work from 60-80 hours per week to 10-20. Spends the rest of his time golfing.

I work in hardware at a non-FAANG shop and made $122k base this year. TC is probably around the $140k zone if you average chit out (basecel crew). The company pays on pretty strict bands... judging by those, my boss is making $350k TC with 25 years time in seat.

Everyone knows how Amazon works. You bust your ass with them for a year, maybe get PIPed and then you add them to your resume and apply for real companies

Yup, the internet doesn't lie especially when it comes to how much money people make. I used to work for Amazon but left because of the 160k salary cap, just recently they increased that cap to 350k so most of the company are now top 5%'ers.

Curious what percentage of software engineers make that kind of coin? $300k plus would put you in the top 2 or 3% of the country in individual income. And that's with all the finance bros, lawyer bros, doctor bros, etc.

Thank goodness I come from a time where being good at math wasn't almost a prerequisite for being successful. I'd be phuked.

What hours are required to pull that money

What experience and certs

How long before it gets offshored to ****** land

How much does rent/ real estate cost in the required location. 400k salary is nothing if an apartment is 5k month rent….

About 70% of engineers in big tech, once they break out of entry level, they should be making 300k+ with a little bit of stock appreciation

i can only answer offshoring, it will happen within 20 years. Theres no difference between paying an Indian 100k to WFH in Bangalore vs paying him 500k to WFH in the bay area

Same here lol. It sucks because I'm actually great at programming, started in high school and still program microcontrollers for fun. Went the EE route instead, kind of wish I would have went software engineering like I initially thought, but in ~2010 everyone was talking about how India was going to offshore all the software jobs and the market would be super saturated. Looks like those people were dead ass wrong with these 30 year old software engineers making half a mil a year or whatever the fuk they're making

WRT offshoring, pretty much every team at the company I work for has a sister team in Bangalore making a quarter of their salary. It's pretty much a matter of time before they Order 66 us IMO.

It's like the same way that wagies worked a 9 to 5 in a cagie for decades, even when the means existed to send the entire workforce full remote within two weeks. That gun is sitting on the table there cocked and loaded, but big organizations are inherently conservative and don't want to be the first to pull the trigger.

There will always be spots for highly paid US engineers if they are good. 6 figure jobs for people that are code monkeys with no actual skills probably won't last forever though.

The offshoring thing has been tried for years. It ends up being most of the bitch work being done offshore and even then a lot of the times it gets recalled back to the US eventually because of how terribly it goes.

Maybe if someday all the talent doesn't want to emigrate from their country to the USA and there is a major cultural shift in some of these areas that might change, but it won't be anytime soon.

one of the businesses in my family is based around getting off-shored engineering work. Working pretty well right now.

Theres no real reason why companies will be paying high engineering salaries in the Us when they can just save costs offshore… just be truthful, if skill and talent can thrive everywhere, not just in the america, whats keeping companies from finally pulling the plug and moving work elsewhere?

The best example are chinese tech companies achieving better tech products with 100% low paid local talent

Just keep going dude, I'm 37 and I know I got this. I realized the key is to get used to being comfortable with not understanding stuff and coming back every single day and coding. I speak 3 languages, coding is very similar, if you don't practice it every single day you won't get it.......at the same time if you don't understand something or its taking too long just keep coding every single day and thinds will click on their own. Ye bro for sure.. Out of curiosity, what language are you learning and from which website? From what I gathered the big two for free online bootcamps are The Odin Project and freecodecamp..

I just started Javascript a few weeks ago. Yea everywhere I read, seems like the Odin Project and FreeCodeCamp are the best. With that said, I found this site called Scrimba, all their learning is interactive and they give you a lot of projects and problems to solve after every topic, helps me solidify everything better. I always try to do a big project on my own after a chapter. Scrimba is also very cheap. Their javascript instructor explains stuff very well.

I also use YouTube a lot to get a different explanation if stuff doesn't resonate.

that's only IF you live in silicon valley. Most of ur income will go towards super high cost of living there and a stupid 2 hour commute per day.

But if ur WFH or remote - good luck making more than $100k.

IT software manager, 20 people reporting to me. I know what everybody makes including my boss as I do the budget for his entire area (over 300+ people). I do almost $200K with bonus, etc... I have two undergrads in Comp Sci and Management Science, have a masters in Comp Sci. I am in the northeast.

Those salaries are unique to FAANG companies. SanFran and the Valley are not the norm. You will NOT see that in the rest of the US. Wall Street pays as do some other sectors but not like FAANG. Do not let anyone kid you otherwise. Most company's IT shop is flooded with foreigners on H1B who suppress wages.

FAANG hires the cream of the crop. Unless you went to school at places like MIT, Stanford, etc... AND are smart as hell, those salaries are not happening. FAANG interviews are notoriously tough. Nobody just skates into a job there.

My friend's son who graduated from MIT worked at Amazon on the west coast, after a year he quit as he could not take it. Amazon is a meat grinder of a company. 60-80 hour weeks are the norm. Go read up about what they do to people.

There are tons of salary surveys out there like Robert Half. Read up.

Read up.
kind of true but u can also land a remote role for FB and its kosher salary

We're all talking like applying and getting hired by Amazon is the same thing as getting hired as a cook at Burger King. Also those salaries are adjusted for cost of living.
