Maybe I'm looking at that past through rose colored glasses, but these are my observations.
Way back in the day you'd shoot the chit with everyone like we were friends. Sure, we didn't all get along. There was trolling, I think a lot of us did a little bit of trolling back in the day. But mostly people were genuine. You didn't have as many people playing fake characters that you do today.
And you would talk about all kinds of stuff. Anything and everything. Lifting/bodybuilding, girls, politics, torrents, music, sports, anything. There was always something different to talk about. I pop in today, and every thread looks the same. Same topics. Same baiting. Same shticks. Just people posting to get reactions and not to generate sincere talk. Threads trying too hard to be the next epic thread instead of a genuine conversation starter.
People were supportive. People would post progress pics and get genuine feedback. Today, someone posts pics, and you get a swarm of posters going in to tear them down. They must be juicing or they must be a bloatlord that has to lose weight. You see it everywhere. Way too many posters that are here just to tear others down and don't contribute anything positive. I know a lot of stuff is just general ball-busting between guys, but a lot of it just feels mean-spirited. The overall attitude is a huge turn-off for a noob looking to jump into lifting, looking to shake off their insecurities, and looking for support and guidance.
But I think one of the biggest things is the user base has gotten older. Younger millennials and zoomers are going to sites that are fresher and hipper, while forums like this are stuck in an age of older millennials and Gen Xers. Heck, the search function hasn't worked in years, so what does that tell someone looking for a hot site to visit for advice? So we've all gotten older and many of us moved on in our own lives.
I keep hearing how this place isn't like the glory days 10-12 years ago. I wasn't here for that. I lost track of the Misc when it was supposedly at its peak. But hearing the way people talk about it, I feel like it was responsible for the downfall. Threads falling off the first page in seconds because of the traffic? That's how conversation dies. Topics get lost as soon as they're started. People have to make increasingly outrageous threads just to get attention. Posters focused on creating characters and situations, and at the end of the day you don't really know the people you're posting with because they're all characters and caricatures. I'd say mostly Misc was a victim of its own popularity.

The site became the most popular on the internet and the owners wanted to get rid of "unpopular" topics and opinions that could hurt business.
Around 2007 the company had potential trouble because they were selling products with some "gear" in them and they got outlawed. So, any discussion about that got locked down. There was a whole bunch of that in relation to the site's popularity and more mods came, and destroyed the forum.
What others said about mod egos is also a great point but they were made mods to shut down conversations that were popular. However, mods are an aftereffect of wanting to make the forum business oriented.
That's why the forum is hidden now.

I think also with introduction of Tinder and redpill/black pill it really lowered mens self esteem. Guys weren’t willing to work out as much anymore and try to impress woman by being fit when “it’s all about face/height”.

Nice to see Cass around (no simp lol)
I've seen forums come and go. I've seen insanely active forums just die due to a company making dumb greedy decisions (Modern War forums.....). I've seen a forum that created an album just randomly die. I've seen small communities kick for quite a while disappear when hosting became an issue.
This place seems like it'd last a good long while as long as Tao leaves it alone. Its comfy and there is still quite a large active member base, plus the random OGs who still drop by and post. There are still quality unique threads (Berring Sea fisherman dude, Yukon Gold dude, Hutrapper, etc) that I honestly don't see anywhere else. We don't have overzealous miss anymore and old banned members have come back.

I think it mostly has to do with forums just dying out generally. All of the forums that were popular 10-15 years ago are nowhere near as populated as they used to be. Newer generation just prefers social media that requires less attention span (Instagram, Tiktok, etc.), a lot of people don't want to read whole forum threads and then post long replies. In 1 minute you can't read a whole page of thread, but you can see multiple pictures and videos on Instagram or TikTok in that time frame.
Discussions there are on a more simplistic level that requires less effort - comments on Instagram or Tiktok are typically 1-2 sentences long, often few or even just 1 word. That works better with modern generation with short attention span instead of writing long posts on a forum. Forums are also less convenient to use and topics are kind of random whereas other Social Media nowadays have algorithms to show exactly what you want to see.
Of course I do agree that part of the problem were rules becoming stricter and stricter over the years which decreased entertaining threads massively. A lot of popular and entertaining posters got banned.
Over-regulation did accelerate the decrease of users but the biggest effect imho is from just forums generally dying out.

Brb, banning someone who spent 400 dollars a month buying supplements on your site. Just fuccin great business model
But he banned so many people.
Most people went to Reddit, its not ********, or instagram, or twitter that killed the Misc its reddit it basically gobbled up all the forums because reddit is simple you join and they have all various type of forums into one you dont hav eto keep joining a forum with a different pass word, you can post in a car forum, supplement forum, dating, etc with the same screen name these subreddits are popular.
I can gurantee you if Reddit wasnt around, most of the forums would still be active, because Myspace, ********, twitter were all around and forums still had traffic. but the popularizing of reddit is what sunk the forums. Its basically the Amazon of forums.

Smartphones were the first nail. We didn't have an app and things like Reddit boomed.
Then it was all the racist incel white nationalist **** that hide the misc and was the final nail. Pretty sure it only exists for the gov. to keep an eye on certain weridos here.

Power tripping mods,
I don't think they mod here anymore but at the time some were actively looking for more rules to enforce here and more personalities to remove, it was horrible.
For example why were guys like Chestbrah banned? Simply for being too popular, why was there a rule that you couldn't even show blanked out nipples? Because a twat of a mod said so. Why was that 20+ page thread closed? Because people were enjoying themselves too much - the overbearing janitors completely ruined this place and then dipped when it collapsed.

I guess internet moderatorship just attracts adult hall monitor types who like to ruin things for everyone.
