I went for a night walk in the Redwood forest (pics)

The redwood forest is 120 years old. Rope bridges start at 6 metres high and the highest platform is 12 metres off the ground. Tallest tree on the walk was 75 metres high.

















Those are my boys fooling around on the stairs.

Sick, that looks amazing. I've always wanted to go and see the Redwoods and the forests of the PNW.

I am in NZ. There is alot of interesting history behind this forest. The trees were brought down here by ship in the late 1800's and planted as an experiment. They grow faster down here, than they do anywhere else. Our climate is very similar to the Pacific North West.

Ah, that explains it! Interesting. I had no idea they exported them like that. I can see them doing well in NZ. From what little I know about it, it's very grey and wet and you guys even have rainforests similar to those in the PNW.

Yes, and no. This particular area does get alot of rain.

As a side note - we also have the coldest rain forest in the world, further south - average temp is around 15c.

From a forestry perspective, our major harvest is Radiata pine (Monterey). That also grows very fast with trees maturing in around 25 years (or less) in some areas. If they get much older than that they get too big and the mills don't like them. The trade off to that is the wood is not as dense as the slower grown trees.

The fern trees are Ponga trees. The underside of the leaves are silver, thats where our silver fern comes from. It's our national symbol, behind the kiwi.

Very cool. I don't think I've really seen them outside of botanical gardens.

Your post card thread got me thinking about going to NZ, I was actually just looking at flights lol

Unfortunely the country is still closed to the unvaccinated, but maybe in the next few years. There's a lot of interesting stuff down there.

That is awesome. I like the daytime view better though. Its crazy that the forest is only 120 years old. Those trees arent even toddlers yet. Redwoods are majestic.

To say it looks amazing would be an understatement. Mirinโ€™ lights. Iโ€™m sure the pics donโ€™t even do it justice. Daytime hike looks fun. Imagining the forest gets lush in the summer but those are some tall motherfukers lol. Glad to see the Jandels family had a good time.

That's so cool. How far is the hike?

If the trees are still pretty young I imagine they are still growing. I wonder if they have to adjust things every few years. Loving the vacation pics.
