actually the government did intervene, that's what the court is, the government. He was tried by the government for speaking and his right to free speech was violated when they fined him.
this "freedom of speech not of consequences" is the biggest cope in the world. You have ALWAYS had the right to say whatever you want WITH consequences. They would just punish you for it in the past. hanging, beheading, prison, fines its all punishment for speech. The entire point of "free speech" is that you wont be punished for your opinion.
