It's ridiculous that the government has so much say in our personal earnings, meanwhile they spend money like a 15 year old kid with daddys credit card. Most irresponsible group when it comes to money has authority over working Americans.... just lol.

Why are you worried about increased staffing from our revenue service? The main thing they do is prevent tax evasion. It helps lower the deficit to collect on taxes that are owed but not collected. Pay your owed taxes and you have nothing to fear. Plus, most individual tax returns are already screened for audit by automation, I highly doubt increased staffing will increase audits on those in the bottom 95% of income earners.

They're going to spend $80B upfront inhopesthat they can recover $200B over the next 10 years.

This is how these "deficit neutral" bills always work. They "hope" that in the best case scenario they bring in a projected amount of money over a decade. I'll let you in on a secret, their projections are always wrong.

Good luck with that.

The IRS currently has over 10,000 job openings they can't fill.

Strong this. If their projections were even remotely close to accurate we wouldnโ€™t be in this mess to begin with.

Read the majority of the new IRS agents Democrats are hiring will be auditing the lower and middle class to most.

"How Democrats' beefed-up IRS could hurt low-income Americans"

https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics...come-americans

excerpt:

...That's because the IRS disproportionately targets low-income Americans when it conducts tax audits each year. In fact, households with less than $25,000 in earnings are five times as likely to be audited by the agency than everyone else, according to a recent analysis of tax data from fiscal year 2021 by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University.

The reason for that is a rise in what is known as "correspondence audits," meaning the IRS conducts reviews of tax returns via letters or phone calls rather than more complex face-to-face audits. Just a fraction โ€” 100,000 of the 659,000 audits in 2021 โ€“ were conducted in person.

According to the Syracuse study, more than half of the correspondence audits initiated by the IRS last year โ€” 54% โ€” involved low-income workers with gross receipts of less than $25,000 who claimed the earned income tax credit, an anti-poverty measure.

Even taxpayers with a total positive income that ranged from $200,000 to $1 million had one-third the odds of being audited by the IRS compared to the lowest-income wage earners. About 9 million taxpayers reported these high-income levels in 2021, but fewer than 40,000 of their returns were audited, or roughly 4.5 out of every 1,000. That contrasts sharply with lower-income Americans, who faced an audit rate of 13 out of every 1,000....

Okay. I don't think I'd be willing to stop making economic projections when it comes to making public policy decisions just because they are often wrong in exact dollar impacts. Would you rather simply lick your finger and hold it in the air?

right wing AF, and I'm good with this. The IRS is the ONLY revenue GENERATING branch of our gov't. It has been understaffed for years, including because of hiring freezes. Would love expanding the IRS and shrinking all other gov't offices.

This dynamic is very easily explained by the IRS being a political football and being chronically understaffed and underfunded. Collecting taxes owed on complex tax returns by corporations and individuals requires an equally skilled revenue service to combat the army of accountants and lawyers these entities deploy.

Even if I'm wrong and the IRS continues to push around lower income individuals, I will gladly take the gambit of trying to staff up and have a chance at reigning in higher income tax evaders rather than stick with the status quo which we know is ineffective.

If you make a buck the government wants to know everything about that buck. How it was made. When it was made. Why it was made. What did you use it on. When you used it. Why did you use it the way you did.

Meanwhile when it comes to voting, the same gov't doesn't even give a fuk if you are allowed to vote or not.

They continue to look on the wrong side of the balance sheet. They're worried about $20b per year when they continue to spend Trillions we don't have.

Additional $80 b per year to recover $20 b is bad investment.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

No one wants to deal with an audit. Not even someone squeaky clean. I had what I'd call a light audit about a decade ago. They asked for proof of all of my writeoffs from3 years earlier.Cheeky kuntsknow most individuals don't hold onto receipts and records for years after their tax filing has been accepted, especially not people in their 20s. I spent a bunch of hours gathering stuff together, sent them more than they needed just in case, in an envelope a couple inches thick. They ended up just taking about $150 from my bank account, sent me a letter afterward saying they had done so.

The letter never explained what I had done wrong in my filing or my record keeping though. I even called, the person I spoke to couldn't tell me. If I were most people, I wouldn't have all the receipts and records still and I'd have owed them many thousands of dollars.
Yeah Buddyyy! Light weight! Light weight baby!!!!
