My theory is that we were created by trees who were looking for a renewable source of oxygen to provide life to them. It makes sense as trees were here long before us and had to survive through some terrible things like the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and floods etc. never again.

An alien civilization who is conscious and doesn't need a body to survive. The criminals from that civilization get trapped in a human body on earth. Earth is literally a space prison from another civilization.
