Bodybuilding started out in the beginning of the 20th century as "physical hygiene" or "Physical Culture".

The idea of Physical Hygiene" is the same as "Oral Hygiene" where you are taking care of your teeth.

There's nothing gay about that.

The idea is that as we get older our bodies turn to fat and/or our muscles waste away. The same principle applies to your teeth but it happens faster with teeth.

It would be awesome if we could build our teeth, but we can't. However, we can build our bodies up through exercise.

So, if you double your muscle mass at 30 then by the time you are 60, you will still have a normal person's muscle mass. That's the principle although the details may be different.
