Hired as Python engineer now they want me to do IT work

Hired as a python developer now they want me to set up cloud infrastructure using container cloud technologies Linux command line garbage do I have the right to be pissed or am I being a poooci?!

It’s mind numbing soul draining crap and it hinders future career opportunities as a developer for higher pay. I make $70k not much.

I guess in most cases that might be true I was thinking more of FAANG developer jobs which tbh I doubt I’m good enough for, so the cloud architecture salary is a little higher but holy crap I want to rip my eyeballs out doing this stuff

Most dev jobs are going to involve that to some degree at least. If OP is only doing devops, that's one thing, but OP hasn't clarified and may have only been there a bit.

Didn't you make a thread about your company bringing you on as a consultant and couldn't place you with a client because you didn't have experience so they paid you to do internal training?

I would say don't rock the boat since it sounds like the company is going out of their way to ensure you have work. Let them know you want to transfer to something python related ASAP, or start applying for other companies.

we are paying people a minimum of 215+ for journeyman cloud positions atm and thats salary not total compensation. straight devops spots regardless of platform are half of that. If OP is just talking about having to use terraform or something to deploy services then ...

Was the job to code for cloud CI/CD pipelines or some automation flows? I mean Python can be used for a lot of things, setting up software defined networking and all kinds of stuff. I guess it depends on what they were wanting your Python skills for

Very rare you'll get a coding job where you simply just code. If you wanted to code full-time you should have been a software engineer. Python is used heavily in all cloud infrastructure. They're asking all cloud engineers to have a decent amount of knowledge in code and python is a popular one. Cloud engineer salary is booming so you can't complain too much. You can add this to your resume and diversify your skills.

I don't think it's easier. Azure is confusing af but AWS is easier and still king. I'm going to learn GCP next month and OCI last. There's so much chit you gotta learn. Makes you want to pull your hair out. This is why the pay is good.

Development and Operations = DevOps

Code repositories, Linux CLI, containers, virtualization, CI/CD pipeline, and so much more. Cloud Engineering does most of this as well.

If you work for a small company you will be asked to do it all. I have worked for large And small companies. When I worked for a small consulting firm I was basically asked to do everything cloud related. If I didn’t know how I better learn quick. The good news is that they would try to give me time to learn it as long as i could learn it fast. Now I work for a large enterprise again so we actually have an automation engineer who does 80% ish of the automation stuff now. Which is nice. Now I mainly habve to code just to make my own job easier. If I can automate stuff that I would normally have to manually do then it frees up my day to do whatever.

I already learned AWS, finishing up Azure this month. Will start GCP next month. Many companies are creating hybrid setups so I need to be ready. Hoping to jump ship to cloud engineering in October.

Yes and no. If you're an elite software engineer Netflix will pay you 300k plus stock option. FAANG companies pay well. I've never seen or heard of any cloud/devops engineer making that much in base salary. However, you can get cloud/devops jobs easier since a chit load of places require them.
