Look for an article. But basically for every job you apply to, you need to tweak your CV/resume and cover letter to match the keywords in the job posting. Kind of like how teachers used those plagiarizing websites to give your papers a score to see if it was plagiarized, companies use services that score applications based on keywords and filter out ones that don’t match. If you have one CV/resume and you are just spamming that to tons of places expect the filters to toss it out at least 80-90% of the time. Nobody even sees it.
Another option though is to look at the section for free/donations of time. Some smaller companies and non-profits need help with computer projects and don’t have the budget. If you do a good job they can write you a glowing reference. Most good jobs require references.

Back in my day the school hooked me up with internships and then one of my classmates was working for a startup. I interviewed and then started working that night lol.
Startups are the best way to get a job quick IMO. You work like a dog though, but after a few years you can always get the cushy corporate gig. I went back to startups to get promoted to management recently. Once I get a few years then I'll go back to corporate maybe. Or maybe the startup goes to the moon and I open a lifting gym somewhere.

Couldn't find a job right out of college and ended up joining the Peace Corps. 3 years later when my hitch was up I had a friend that worked in the group and I had some experience programming on my own that was exactly what they were doing.
That said, the state of courtesy in recruiting these days is absolutely deplorable. When I was looking out of college (1991) I was cold snail mailing resumes to software companies advertising in Dr. Dobbs Journal. Probably 3/4 of them snail mailed a flush letter to me. These days, even with everything online, once they're done with you, you never hear another thing from them. It takes 5 seconds and costs nothing to email a form flush letter, but even that seems to be too much. I've been to in-person interviews where I never heard a peep from them afterwards.

That's the kind of scummy closing technique Brad might use to sell his mutual funds. Get me committed, then change the terms at the last minute and hope I'm in too deep to back out. If I just fold like a beta and go along with it, that's 12% extra profit on the contract for ******

Actually that is why the Underemployment rate is there. "underemployed" means being in a job unrelated to your major / employed at a job that pays less than what you should be getting if you were in your correct field of work.
