How are you unable to see and hear the replies that were given to the officers after watching the video.
He identifies himself, the female neighbor identifies him, the daughter and wife identify him with a wallet/id, the officers have the option to let him go.
As a former cop he knows his legal rights, and tests them on their procedure.
Not above the law ......but knew his rights as a former officer.

A few things...

Firstly the black guy acted like a complete tool and acted suspicious. Not only did he refuse to ID himself but he then started to walk away very fast and talked about suing and racial profiling and making a scene. Those are all things someone would do if they were not supposed to be on the property to try and NOT get arrested. The fact is he saw an opportunity to make this a way bigger and way more racial thing that it really was. He realized that and started acting on it within seconds of the cops showing up. He didn't have to do that. He could have calmly explained who he was. ID'd himself. Why he was there. And everything could have been avoided.

But make no mistake....he wanted this to become a 'racial'/police incident. He wanted to be arrested. He even said so. When cops approach you do you tell them you want to be arrested? I know I don't. It's stupidity. Common sense says you do whatever is necessary to NOT BE arrested.

Also when he was told the name of the owner of the truck he said he had never heard of that name. Then he said he knew "Ron". But didn't know the last name. Does that make any sense? Friends for 7 years and watering the plants but you don't know the guys name? Again he was acting suspicious.

If he had acted like his wife then none of this would have happened. Calm and cool. 99.9999% of the time if you act this way with a cop? Nothing bad will happen.

Would you rather the cops NOT investigate and just ask the guy who he was and he refused, the cops said ok no big deal carry on, and then he turned out to be a criminal who did rob the house? I mean all of you would be screaming how bad the police are at their jobs and how they can't even protect us. The guy flat out refused to ID himself after the police received a call about him. They didn't just randomly show up. THEY RECEIVED A CALL.

Of course they need to find out who he is.

As for as letting him go once they found out who he was? Here we ALL would need to know the law. And I don't and I doubt most of you do either. Yes common sense would be that once they knew who he was then let him go. But......The cop explained that once he was arrested, they can't unarrest him. He needs to be processed and then he can fight it in court. Now is that the law? I don't know. It goes against common sense and makes things much more complicated but if it is the law....its the law. ESPECIALLY since everyone, especially the left and the black community, has screamed for years about cops wearing cameras now so that everything is recorded. Ok. They wore cameras. It was recorded. They can't erase the tape so if the law says he needs to be booked? They don't have any leeway there. He has to be booked. Period.

Is it right? Probably not but it is what it is.

It was an unfortunate situation but if the man had just acted calmly and not made it a racial thing this all would have been avoided.

If I’m not home and someone is on my property I would want the police to come up to him and ask him what the **** he’s doing there.

If my neighbors asked me to water the flowers while they’re gone to vacation, and police come up and ask me for ID I would obviously show them my ID and tell them who I am,

i think the issue is he thought watering a friends flowers wasn't an offense that required,
1. the police presence and
2. worthy of carrying ID
A lot of old guys got "trumped up charges" in the 60's and 70's and Alabama was one of those famous states for fake charges (no pun)
Why was there no former officer courtesy or pastor courtesy offered to him once they saw his id?
Seems like silly paperwork unless you have a Quota.

Telling police who you are and what you’re doing is not sufficient, many home intruders pretend to be cable company workers or fixing gas pipelines etc. they need to prove their identity to law-enforcement.

Nobody carries ID, I have been stopped in my neighborhood and asked who i was and asked for ID, I am really white, so was the policeman, someone called the police on me because late at night I rang someone’s doorbell because their car battery was going to die, they left the lights on, I noticed when I was walking , no one answered so I kept walking, I explained to the policeman who I am, where I live, and offered to walk or ride with him back to my house to show him my ID, there is nothing wrong with this, There is a polite and respectful way to handle this, and there is a spoiled child victim mentality astronaut way to handle it.

Many home intruders pretend they are bringing mail, this is a common trick, pretending to be fixing pipelines or cables in the back, or something else. It doesn’t matter what he was doing on the property, if he is a stranger he is at least to prove his identity when asked.

The neighbour who called them confirmed she had made a mistake though and he was who he said he was. The police were just butthurt they'd been called for nothing.
